Around here there was a house for sale, and it came with a peacock. The new owners fell in love with him...for awhile. Then he started keeping their baby boy up at nap time and at night, with his calls. My husband heard of their woes through word of mouth, and confirmed that they did indeed want to give up the gorgeous boy after all. As he is free range 24/7, we had to catch him---which was suprisingly much easier than I thought it would be. He was nice and didn't resist much. Attached is a picture of our new royal-looking peacock. Isn't he a beauty!

When I was a kid, we had a beauty like that show up out of no where. We think he was lonely and enjoyed the company of the barnyard chickens. He was never any trouble, slept way up in the trees and hung around in the yard during the day under the dogs' protection. Loved it when he displayed. I remember being surprised at how much rattling noise it made! Other than the occasional "halp," which could be a bit startling, we really enjoyed him. Stayed around for about 5 years I think. Do you know how long they live?

Enjoy your living jewel!

20 years is what i have been told on here heck any pea that cam make it free ranging for 5 years is a smart critter in my book,
Some of mine are turning 2 soon and have been free ranged sense they turned 4 months, so far so good , only had one incident with a critter and my dogs just happen to be in the area, the hen was fine lost some feathers and what ever it was got a 6 pack escort out of the area

Congrats, amsunshine! Ten years ago, a pair of freerange IB males decided to move into our back yard. We believe they belonged to a farmer about a mile away, and he had passed away. There was no one to feed the peafowl, so they went off in search of food. Two males showed up here and one was almost immediately taken by a predator. (Might have been a dog.) Readers Digest version: After about 6-8 months, we realized that the remaining male liked it here, so we got him a barn, built an aviary and located a couple of girlfriends for him. This male is about 20 years old. I've heard that around 25 is a ripe old age. As he ages, he's not quite as good about preening himself so I sometimes help him. Big Bird is truly a gift and he opened up a new world for us. He's safe and happy in his aviary, has plenty of room and gets spoiled a lot. I know you'll enjoy your adventure as much as we've loved ours!

Thank you everyone! We feel blessed and honored. We have named him Solomon because he looks royal. My husband wants to keep him in the barn for about a month so he knows where his new home is. Would you say that's about right? Also, if I'm around him enough, will he ever get to the point of letting me pet him? Maybe that sounds funny but I love getting up close to animals I have. I had a duck for 6 years as an indoor pet. I raised her from a day-old. She was a big baby who laid on her back in my lap to have her nails trimmed.

It's unlikely a free ranger will allow you to pet him. But it never hurts to try making friends :) Congrats on your new beauty!
