Gosling hatched naturally, but parents keep it sequestered.

That was awesome the vet was there. Glad to hear both are doing well.

Oh my gosh when we had the 2 goslings with our pair I couldn't get enough of them all. It is the most precious thing watching them with their goslings. My gander was even papa to Muscovy ducklings that hatched here up until we got him a goose mate. Too bad ducks aren't the same with their ducklings as geese are with their goslings.

Absolutely, if Ryan makes a peep, papa is right there, saying what's going on. Ryan went in the pool at Papa's urging.

Yeah the sad note is I found a dead duckling by the waterer in the duck pen. Not sure what happened It had clearly been in the waterer on side of it and looked drowned. The shell was in the water. The waterer isn't near the nest. I was wondering if new Swede had picked the partially hatched duckling up and tried to carry off. She had hatched ducklings at my sister's last spring. It made no sense. She has tried to lay on nest.

Then I found two ducklings at bottom of nest dead last night, and one with half of body still in shell. They seemed to have been squashed, or suffocated. Really sad. Was she trying to hide ducklings from the new girl? I think nest got too built up and some eggs were on lowest layer .I changed that last night, once I realized this. Saw another duckling trying to hatch. I hope that one will be okay. I put Penelope on other side of pen just in case her presence was disrupting things. She can still feel close. Is what I did to begin with.

Feel like the ducklings deaths are my fault somehow. But I know we live and learn, especially where critters are concerned. We can't put our human emotions on them, though I do.

I do to can't help it.
Sorry about the losses but unless we can be there 24/7 things can happen. Having the new duck close by could have upset the sitting duck I don't know, but a good idea to keep her on the other side for now. Mama ducks can trample their own ducklings if they feel threatened and have been known to carry hatching ducklings off too. Have no idea why they do things like this. But please don't beat yourself up we live and learn. Oh how I hate those hard lessons too. :hugs

Ah most definitely hard lessons.

That explains some things. I think it was the new duck then upset the momma. She was pretty good with the first ducklings, but I did remove them when few days old after hatching. I saw them up top on mom, under the wing. These last babies didn't even get a chance it seemed. Just smothered under mom. I am checking daily, if any more i will remove them immediately. The best solution would be to buy an incubator.

Thanks for the feedback.
