Hi there. My 10 day old gosling has suddenly started making something like a clicky noise when it inhales and exhales. He has also been less active and quieter than before. Is it something I should worry about?? Also, I’m really struggling to keep it warm, any suggestions?

I do not have a heat lamp, however i have placed the goose in a very big cardboard box, I have put some holes in the floor and added some sawdust bedding. May I also mention that the floor of this room has underfloor heating. This is my first time owning a gosling and I have no idea what to do. I took it away from its mother as the other male geese where stepping and biting on it

Can you put him back with his mother but remove the ganders to a different temporary pen?

Or move the mother to a temporary area with the gosling?

I already tried separating the mother and gosling before I took it in, however the mother was reluctant to going near it. You could say it didn’t realise what it was. Can I also say, these geese that I have are very, very different. Other geese I have been towards are aggressive and lively. These seem like they have no sense or soul inside of them. When they where on the eggs, the would run away at the sight of a bird never mind protecting the eggs. Also out off all 30 eggs only 2 hatched, one of them I was too late and had been suffocated by its mother. This is what I mean it’s as if they don’t know that the gosling are there’s.

They’re probably new parents then. First year parents aren’t always the best.

Do you have an electric blanket? I’ve used one to keep a duckling warm who’s mother was also lacking in maternal instinct. You can keep the baby in a box with one but make sure that there is a space that the blanket doesn’t reach where the gosling can remove itself to if it gets too hot. Heat levels with electric blankets can be hard to gage so let the gosling let you know if it’s too hot or cold. They will tell you.
Panting and rapid breathing = too hot.
Huddled and shivering, often with crying = too cold.

The blanket will get dirty….

If you don’t have an electric blanket you will need to warm the room to be comfortable, somewhere between 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and watch the gosling for symptoms of being too hot or cold.
If you have a fleece blanket or sweater you can wrap the little one in that too.

Are they still making that clicky sound? Have you seen sneezing or watery discharge from the nose or mouth?

hi. It’s not making the noise however the whole body moves when inhaling and exhaling. I will try the electric blanket and see how it goes.

No I do not… do you think it’s normal? I’ve asked a few others and they said as it’s still young it’s normal to see movement inside the body when breathing. One other question, what do I do about it being alone. I try my best to spend a lot of time with it, but I can’t dedicate my whole day towards it.

Does the gosling have a deep waterer? I have heard that their nostrils can get plugged up if they cannot rinse it and same with ducks?...
