Hi All,

My sebatopol goslings are hatching. My first was out this AM, looks good. My second unzipped and popped out maybe an hour ago. She went on a walk about over all the other eggs in the incubator and left a bloody trail.

I lifted her up to see this large, swollen area with more jelly like area. I'm concerned that this might be external GI. What do you think it is? What can I do?

There was a lot of the brown goo in her shell post hatch. I have her on folded papertowls to keep her off the hardware cloth.

Please offer any advice!

I had this exact same thing last year in one of my goslings. I seperated mine for a few days and applied iodine to the area it dries it up so its not oozing. You have to keep it seperate because i tried to let mine stay with the others but little toe nails and curious goslings can start it bleeding again. Mine healed up fine as if nothing was ever wrong. She was normal she would probably still be here if a racoon hadnt broke in the pen and killed her and 5 siblings when they were 4 mos old.

I have had that in goslings and it is just everything has not completely went inside the vent yet. Put spray iodine on it to help it not get bacteria in it. Also keep off wire and by itself for a few days like 8 said...
I put spray iodine on all their vents when hatched to help keep bacteria out of the vent.

Thanks! Does the umbilicus connect through the vent?

I applied iodine and have her sitting in the incubator still on paper towels. Looks like it is shrinking and less swollen, but the gooey red stuff is similar sized.

I will set up a separate brooder for her.

That is where all the insides go and that is why it is so important to let the gosling go in the shell until they absorb all of that inside them.
It will go away slowly but for sure. But for right now you are doing the right thing for baby. Also put a stuffed toy in with the gosling to snuggle with, NO strings or ribbons...

Thanks, RURU. I am surprised she has this- she did a picture perfect unzipping without help. Her egg was perfectly cracked with separated lid. Glad to hear it is semi normal and fixable.

Now to find the perfect snuggle buddy stuffed animal.
