Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

No hon, breeding season is late winter or early spring depending on your climate. Those of us on the other end of the earth are hatching babies now.

I think because we´re in the tropics, our geese get going much earlier. My first goslings were hatched in July, which is like january in the northern hemisphere! Brrr..can´t imagine it!

Well incubating has not gone well! One of my geese has gone broody on 8 eggs. She doesn't come off of them for more than 15 minutes at most. I am impressed with this girl as she is only a yearling. She is one week in.
Not gone well? Sounds good to me.

Long time since I've talked to any of you guys! I hope your hatching season is going better than mine. Unfortunately I think this will just have to be a dud year for me. I found out I had cervical cancer this past October...about a week before my 40th birthday to beat it all! Since then things have been pretty much insane! I've been pretty darn sick as you can imagine but I'm finally feeling a bit better now. I've had 25 daily internal radiation treatments along with 6 chemotherapy treatments. When those were done I had to have five internal (brachytherapy) treatments. Those were the WORST! They put me to sleep for each one and basically inserted radiation filled tubes inside and radiated from the inside out to try and kill the rest of the tumor and any remaining cells. Thank heaven those are finally done...Now I'm going through what seems like the hardest part...WAITING to see if all this stuff worked or not! My first appt. with the oncologist isn't until May 10th and I'm pretty sure I won't even find out anything that day. UGGGH! I sure hope I'm gonna be okay. I'm really scared.

Anyway, back to the geese! I had gotten so sick and weak before I found out I had cancer that my youngest son started taking care of all my birds for me. He's been amazing! Unfortunately, the cancer and another really bad family issue had my mind focused elsewhere. I finally got my bator up and running almost two weeks ago and set 24 eggs...so far it looks like they're ALL duds! I'm so upset with myself. I should have been on top of things more. I set another nine a couple days ago and I think at least one of my fertile girls is still laying (one is a yearling and wouldn't ya know it she's a laying machine but it being her first year she has no fertiles!), so I'm hoping I can hatch out at least a couple beebees this season.

Iain...you KNOW how much I want eggs from your gorgeous trio! Are you still taking any orders?

Anyone else have nice dewlaps that would be willing to part with a few eggs? My hope is to get a new really nice quality grey gander so I can add some new blood in my line. Hope you all are happy and more importantly HEALTHY since I last saw (spoke to) yuns!

Blessings!

Hi animaladdictions. You´ve had a really bad time, then. I do hope it´s behind you now. Well this is a good place to keep you distracted!
oh...hahah. Thank you for the correction

.
Well I want to be over with you guys then. Now I have to WAIT

.
Although, in saying that I managed to find some one who can give me some Chinese X Pilgrims egg and Chinese lay earlier so that is less waiting and I will still be able to ID sex at birth because the sex linked birds continue on even to the 2md x.

hm....I was hoping to get them in the next 1-2 month. 4 months is a real long wait and I am horrible with patience.lol.
I live in NSW, you?
I think the chinese will interrupt the auto-sexing genes of the pilgrims. Better to wait for what you want. Oh, and NSW will of course be a little later in starting the breeding season. Just gives you plenty of time ot learn and prepare for them!

Wow. I am so sorry for what you're going through. I can only imagine. My dad died from throat cancer (he was a heavy smoker) way back in 1998. And I can only remember the fear I felt as his daughter and the possibilities of what the cancer could do. He opted completely out of chemo therapy though. Both his mother and father went through it (also smokers) and he remembered how sick they were, so when radiation didn't work, he just let go. Took me ages to understand how his decision was for MY benefit, but eventually I realized he was not actually selfish about that decision at all. He didn't want me to go through what he went through with his own parents. He died, but he died a hero. The anniversary of his passing is just over a month from now, and I memorialize him every year.

But don't worry about the geese though. Just remember that you WILL get better, and you need to keep fighting for those babies out there. Those birds need their mommy :) And that's plenty of reason not to worry about this year, but stay in the game for next year!

Not to mention, EVERYONE is having a bad year with their fowl. The odd winter we've had in the northern hemisphere has affected everything. I have a bantam chick order in with McMurray Hatchery that they had to push back an entire MONTH because even their hatches aren't doing well! And you know a giant hatchery like that will do everything by the book to avoid losing stock!

Some geese up here seemed to have started laying early while others started late. I normally get excellent hatch rates at home, but I've lost about 50% of my own eggs so far this year. It's just crazy! So don't let it get you down that this year is a dud. You're DEFINITELY not the only one!

Quote: I am very grateful for all of your wonderful information and I will be sure to ask more questions.
Ok, so July is only 3 months off....I think I can wait hahah. I have got a few hatches I want to do before then anyway so it should be perfect timing

Yeah I guess your right. I sort of do want purebreds.
haha, thank you very much

. I really want to spoil them as they will sort of be my pets.

Hi, I wanted to say that I am so very sorry for what you are going through. My mom has cancer on the speech centers of her brain and it is none operable. She went through chemo and it was very hard on her. She has issues with finding the right words to express hersel and she has a very hard time understanding people who talk to fast. She also has had bouts with depression and lately has been feeling nostalgic. She was raised on a farm and misses it. I bought the house next door to her a year and a half ago, and have been planting both of our yards. Then about 6 months ago she wanted chickens and geese but knew she couldn't care for them, I already have to care for her 3 pugs for her.. As I had wanted some as well, I took the plunge, and I am so glad I did. My mom and dad come over everyday to watch them. Mom sits under the wisteria I planted for her, dad goes and talks to them, ;). My mom was given 3 years to live, but she beat that! So there is hope, keep up your spirits and enjoy what you can. I believe it was us keeping mom's spirits up and not allowing her to stay depressed that made a difference, we didn't let her give up.

Best wishes and good luck! :fl

Animaladdictions, I'm very sorry to hear of your struggles and what a bummer to not have eggs to hatch from your own birds. My girls are still laying, but I stopped gathering eggs this week to see if they wanted to hatch a few of their own. They are not broody yet, so I can mark the eggs in their nest and collect a few fresh laid ones, if you want. Shoot me a pm and we can go from there.
