Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Now i have another question, I just picked up and removed a 5'blk snake from the duck house I have 2 ducks in there sitting on fake eggs but neither one know this and this duck was not going to leave the snake was going inside her stall when I saw it. I did not kill it but may have to I had another 4'in the yard today also. we get them as big as 6' so question should i keep Missy's door closed so I don't have to worry about one getting into their house? I can open it up in the afternoon long enough for her to come out to eat she usually is only out about 5 min. Will her and Sam keep the snake out? he stays close by but I have seen him act afraid of snakes in the past. Last year a snake got one of my ducklings at 2 days old thank the Lord I came on to it right after it got him and was able to unwind the snake from it's little body. It lived. I don't mean to be a worry wort but if we make it to hatch day we'll only have 1 gosling. We'd all be heart broken if something happened to it.

First of all, don't trust snakes around Missy. She may or may not defend her nest. But the snake may also not seem BIG enough, or move fast enough, to really make her worried. So I'd play it safe, and assume that she WON'T defend the nest against them.

Second, buy moth balls. More than one box. Sprinkle them all around Missy's enclosure. Snakes do not like the smell of moth balls, and will avoid getting near her because of the moth balls. Try not to put it where the goslings can get to them once they hatch. I doubt Missy will touch them, but the goslings might. So if Missy is in a pen, put the moth balls around the ENTIRE outside of her whole pen. They don't need to be piled up on each other, but a few inches apart or so will make the smell strong enough to deter snakes. And the scent alone, in an open area like that, won't become concentrated enough to actually cause any of your geese or goslings any harm. As long as they can't eat it.

Although one suggestion I once read was to get a bunch of 2-liter bottles, and poke holes all in them. Then put some moth balls in each one, and place them on the ground or hang them all around the enclosure. The snake still smells it and avoids it, but the geese and goslings can't get to it to eat it.

Thanks ChickDancer I'll have to use bottles because where their house is is inside a large fenced in area and all my flock have access to it. So I'll use bottles.

Advice, please?

All of my chicks are out of the incubator. Goslings are about 5 days away.

Should I take them out for a cool down period and clean the incubator?
