Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

SO EXCITING, PATTI!!!

As hard as it is to do..... I place my geese in lockdown just like I do eggs in my bator, which means I do not disturb them.

As for Sammy, either way will be fine. Last year, when Beignet hatched her babies, Chicory and the two juveniles she adopted and raised all hovered right over her. She didn't seem to mind. This year, both Beignet and Delta got locked up away from their mates, but only because we knew we would move them to a new pen right away and it was easier for us to grab and carry momma and babies without the ganders interfering. As soon as we emerged, the ganders came running and followed us right away into their new pens. Of course, it was love at first sight for all my ganders.

I'll be sure to keep a close eye on the thread for updates!!

I put a female Marans chick in with the turkeys - she is 1 week older than them but miles ahead developmentally. that seems to be helping to "activate" them.

I am so grateful for this forum - I am sure I wouldn't have gotten this far with them if I hadn't seen others' ideas here!

This is absolutely nerve wracking I woke up at 4:30 this morning just wondering if the little one had externally pipped and you know what you sure can't see through those huge bodies so I have no way of knowing. Sure hope all is good under there. Sammy is guarding the window.

Hi MLyd. I hope all goes well there. Utah leaves them to it, I hover about. My experienced geese are fine with theirs, but my first-timers I keep an eye on. I find the ganders don´t cause a problem, it´s the geese getting too keen, or thinking there´s an alien coming out, or just sitting too tight. That´s the nerve-wracking part, I hope she does ok with it.

As long as Missy has access to water, you shouldn´t have to worry about the humidity for it to hatch, so just sit tight until it pips. Then keep an eye that Missy is being nice mom. Geese naturally do what we want to do...assist! And they´ll nibble at the shell once it´s pipped, (which is why I lost one last year, if you remember, so as soon as the others pipped, I let them hatch indoors and then gave them all back, worked well. I´ll see how she goes this year.) Maybe Missy will be a natural mom and not get too nibbley nor sit too heavily. The gozzie has got this far, I do hope it goes well now.
