Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Isn't it amazing how well she has done. Really dedicated.

The way Sam is so protective makes me think both are girls, but I will post pics at their 4month birthday for everyone else to guess. They have me stumped. Do dads act protective of their sons like they would females?

Today I had to grab hold of Babe and hold her down she grabbed hold of a chicken and would not let go. grrr.
My ganders are the same to all the goslings, right up until the next breeding season starts. But grabbing a chicken sounds more male than female to me.....and don´t forget, size is an individual thing, even within a breed......looking forward to pics.

LB, glad to see you having a wonderful hatching season. Your goslings are adorable!

P, Most of my ganders treat the goslings the same until late fall, too. But I can sometimes tell with subtle behavior differences by age 12 weeks. And while the dad/son combo may squabble during breeding season the next year, they usually get along. On a side note, I find it very interesting that boys hatched and raised together remain best friends even during breeding season.

Things have been crazy here lately and not able to post much or take pictures, but everyone is doing well. The magpie has fully recovered and will be released in the next couple of days. Spirit has been wearing his custom boot on the foot that had surgery and is getting around well again. The baby Muscovy that injured his leg has fully recovered, too.

In other news, I have been dealing with recovering a quad of grey dewlaps that I sold earlier this year. Back in March, I regretfully listed this lovely group and sold them to what I had thought was a good home. I made the guy promise to keep my number and call me if he didn't want to keep them and I would gladly take them back. He said he would and reassured me he planned to keep them as pets. But, I had a bad feeling afterwards and missed them terribly. Last week my hubby ran across an ad for them and showed it to me, saying he supported my buying them back. So, this weekend we drove 2.5 hours each way, returning home with my dewlaps. They are pretty roughed up, but their personalities have not changed one bit. They clearly remember me and are as sweet, outgoing, and trusting as always. I do not know what I was thinking ever parting with them. I will not make that mistake again.

I remember you mentioning them some time back. Glad you got them back ok. Sounds like they were neglected rather than badly treated, so that´s something. Well done to hubby! Sounds like mine. These sneaking suspicions have to be taken notice of, eh?
So, would grabbing a chicken by the neck and trying to throttle it be a subtle difference you´re thinking of?

I have noticed, too, that the bonds the males make are very strong. I have 2 pairs of males that share one female! Sometimes the males mount each other, which ends in a little altercation, but never anything serious. so funny. Sometimes they´re so busy out-stepping, out-gliding, out-'look-at-me-how-elegant-can-you-get"ing each other, that the female gets neglected!
Good news on the other birds too, especially Spirit.

And my little goose has now adopted the imprinted goslings too, although they´re still getting used to her, but I put them out there with her and the 3 tinies this morning, and I´ve hardly ehard a peep, so they must be fine with her. Tongiht I´ll see if they go to her for warmth. If so, then we´re sorted.

She´s going to be a very useful goose.

Brazil what are the colours of the new hatch?!
2 female Pilgrims and the adopted one in the pic above from the mix-breed pieds... another pied, it would seem.
There are more eggs to hatch, but nothing new yet, just 5 that are due to hatch in about 3 weeks, pied male with pied female, which I´m interested to see.
One of those young males that you think may be a lavender has a very dark feather shafts in the tail just starting to show through......much darker than the auto-sexing males have. we shall see....
