Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

The way Sam is so protective makes me think both are girls, but I will post pics at their 4month birthday for everyone else to guess. They have me stumped. Do dads act protective of their sons like they would females?

Today I had to grab hold of Babe and hold her down she grabbed hold of a chicken and would not let go. grrr.
@Iain Utah , it was this post I was referring to... grab a chicken, not let go... male or female behaviour?

She is a born feral. She never had physical contact with people before I caught her. At most she watched a person put food down. She scratched and bite the heck out of me yesterday. She is scared of her food and water dish, plastic bags and lots of other things. But she is young, show her kindness and she will tame down. I spend hours with her wrapped in a towel on my lap just holding and petting her. It will take time but she will settle down and be a great pet for someone.
Well done you, then! I´ve never seen a feral kitten looking as calm as that! My cousin used to have one, crazy thing (cat, not cousin). It couldn´t stay in the house, it´d wreck the place, and would panic if they had visitors....
LB, I love the way the Pil moms are looking at you in the pic! the normandy mom is soo pretty!

I agree! The people on this thread have helped me out so much! I am very thankful to have found this thread with the great people that are on it.

Nate ,your geese are so cute! I love the pic where they have their neck crossed. It made me think of that other pic you posted of the "pencil necks" . =)

That is sad about your duck. I hope you find a way to keep them safe at night and catch the killer. The new kitten looks very nice for a feral. our Florida feral cats could never be touched, they are flat out wild animals. they have colonies around here where groups of people catch them tag them by snipping off a corner of their ear, get them fixed then release them. we have so many predators in my area that if i left my birds out passed dusk they would not make it. I love your dog pics! I wanted to train my dog like that when i was younger but i never gave myself the time. it is a lot of dedication.

@livininbrazil
see the way his neck is? I trained them to run across the yard when i call "OLLIE". so now he will run up to me with this posture and demand food from the jug i am holding! this is about as close as he is allowed to get to her.

this is Ollie and the ducks running across the yard. I turned it into a game and they really enjoyed finding me and running to the food!

FYI. It is weird for me to leave the grass long for the birds. it scares me that snakes will hide in it. but the birds love the grass.
Andrea, cut the grass.... best all round. Long grass can cause probs in geese...short grass much better for them!

Forest looks fine with Ollie... the neck thing is him trying to protect someone, but I´m not sure who!

Just make sure he only gets the food when you´re ready... not too much demanding on his part. Forest looks very relaxed. Very well done to you.

I saw the Manx tomcat trying to break into the coop, and he was beating up my cat Patches for her food. He is just too mean to stay, I am looking for a new home for him. I do trap, neuter, and release cats, but some are just too aggressive.
okay i understand. and i agree, i have caught and rehabbed 4 of them and that was enough. they were so wild and hard to deal with that i will never do it again

Patches is a rehabbed feral cat. She loves pets but don't ever try to pick her up. Patches is the mother of 3 of my indoor kittens. She was already and adult and had a litter when I started taming her. Because of the kittens I couldn't trap her, so we did it the long hard way. But she now gets regular vet appointments and her rabies shots,I deworm her as needed. So she is tame enough, and is an excellent mouser. I have also trapped, neutered and released 3 tomcats, I have only seen one of them since I released them, but I put food out for them every night.

We did another agility demo last night. This one was a charity to raise money for homeless animals. Our trainer donated 2 classes to be auctioned off, with the money raised going to the charity. Because we were in an open area with no fences, close to a main road, with a lot of bad mannered pet dogs, I kept my girls on leash.

Really ? I can cut the grass? thank heaven!!! I kept reading that you dont need to cut your grass when you have waterfowl because they will do it for you so i thought it needed to be longer. lol!! I think Ollie is trying to figure out his role. He has risen to the top of the pecking order without being nasty. The ducks just naturally follow him . except for my one scovie drake. they are in competition. there behavior reminds me of rivals without the pecking.

Grass already cut?!!

Geese will keep grass short, but only in their favourite areas, and of course, depends how many geese you have to eat it. You´ll enjoy watching them crop the short grass now. Sounds like things are sorting themselves out there.

Well I left 2 eggs with one of my imprinted geese for her to hatch. One hatched beautifully, and is now 2 days old. the other was internally pipped. So, I went to check today, and it must have externally pipped, but she´d been sitting too tight and had crushed the egg. Amazingly, the baby was still alive inside. so, it´s now up here with me under the lamp...that good old lamp! All one side of the egg is crushed, and also the a bit on the other side, it still hasn´t absorbed its yoke, and there´re still some blood vessels in the membrane... hoping it stays put for a while, but there´s hardly any intact shell to hold it there. I´ll have to think about this one!
