Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

I know this is a goose forum but I just had to show duck find from this a.m. and I know some of you but don't know if you ever look at duck forums so I apologize up front.

My Cayugas eggs from this a.m. (six total)

The three on the left are from Cayuga's that have been laying for about a month. They laid the dark eggs at first and as time passes they get lighter. My neice says that their toner is running low but she is young so it is cute. The three on the right are from Cayuga's that laid their first egg today and the one in the middle is a large chicken egg for comparison.

My two male Cayuga's are just now figuring out what all the female head bobbing means so hopefully we will soon be hatching some Cayuga ducklings.

Now back to your regular goose programming. Thanks.

I thought cayuga eggs were green.... I had no clue that they would turn white /start out white...so there is a chance that some of the white eggs are the cayugas... i dont know who is laying them with 5 ducks and no broodies.

That is so cute, the lil gosling looks like a toy. How's Forest doing with her?

She does look like a toy! I think she is imprinted like Forest was, however she is not afraid of the other birds. Yesterday I took her out to the duck house. It was so funny to see Forest running from Mandie! Forest was trying to get to me and so was Mandie. I am going to have to video it!. Mandie would run to stay in between my legs while i carefully walked in circles to see what they would do. Forest tried to stay near me while staying away from Mandie. Mandie knows I am mom but isnt afraid. Last night when we brought Forest inside, I held her on my lap while Mandie played on a towel with my son. When Mandie got close enough to Forest she would slowly try to peck at her but I would block her and tell her no bite. All in all Forest shows potential. My son Saireth got Forest's baby chew toys which Forest loves and let her chew on them and then let Mandie chew on them and kept alternating. He kept talking to them and saying "see it's sharing, good girl" every time it was the babies turn to chew Forest paused and watched like she was very interested. I will not allow them together alone for a long time but they have their crate side by side so they can see each other. Mandie has a mirror, some stuffies and baby toys in the crate with her. she seems pretty happy but the heat light is making her skin dry. I dont know if I should put a humidifier near her.
my computer is still crashing. i might have to take it in, i get about 10 minutes before it decides to restart and my dropbox account wont sync so i will try and load a few more pics of many with my cell.

What is the temp in your house and in her brooder? after first week it can be dropped back to 80 as long as she is out of drafts. I think dry skin is pretty normal with water fowl. at this age. I think they'll be good friends eventually.

The first egg a Cayuga lays will almost always be somewhere between a dark olive/grey to dark grey. Really high quality Cayuga's can lay an actual black egg the first time. With each egg they get lighter until they are almost white (dusty greyish white). Then they stop laying and when they start over it is back to dark to light again.

Keep posting how you get Mandie and Forest to get together. I have two female Toulouse and one Male and it appear that Sting (the male) has bonded pretty strongly with Miss Lydia (a female) which leaves Pauline (the second female) out of the loop. Miss Lydia (who post to this group) has suggested that I might get a male gosling, let Miss Lydia (the goose) raise him and perhaps they will bond as a pair when he is old enough. Sounds almost incestious but it really isn't. So, I am really interested in how things progress with your two and the techniques you might use. There is, of course, a big difference since mine are outside and yours sit in your lap watching TV and play video games.

jtn you don't have a tv and video set up in your goose house?

And I suggest you get Pauline a gosling[gander] for her very own. Sting and Lydia can have their own goslings. lol she will fall in love with the gosling and will adopt it very nicely. I gave my 2 adults their goslings at 3 weeks old they took right over. I just took the 2 babies out every day for them to see and meet it was the most precious time seeing Missy especially fall in love with those babies.

Actually I probably should put a TV out there since I spend so much time with them. The hardest part of this entire deal is having to wait until spring when someone might have goslings available and then to find a nice one here in the West Texas area.

Have you looked for an adult gander? might find one someone is not wanting to keep over winter. Too bad your not near Ga,Ala, RoBo has Pilgrims he/she is trying to rehome.
