serv when Missy started laying her first year they started mating in mid Jan. by end of Jan she had laid her first egg, last year her second year they didn't start mating till  first of Feb and she laid mid Feb. No telling what will happen this coming year except Sam is going to be 1 tired gander.   But he'll be smiling.

Thank goodness he gave up smoking . He may take up the pipe since he has taken to wearing a scarf.

IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING?????

I went out this morning to let everyone out and when I let out my three geese I noticed that their straw bedding had been messed with. I looked more carefully in their pen and in one corner there was what appeared to be an early attempt to build a nest. Is this the beginning of the whole process that precedes egg laying and might lead to nesting/sitting and goslings? Should I just leave it alone or muck it back into flooring? If eggs are in the future will they just be in the nest of will they sort of bury them like the ducks do?

I went out this morning to let everyone out and when I let out my three geese I noticed that their straw bedding had been messed with. I think you maybe on to something, someone is playing house, now if that means egg laying is just around the corner that will have to be seen, but as far as nest sitting that would be still down the road I'd think. I'd just leave it alone and see what happens. She'll probably lay inside if she feels comfortable in there. and she can make a nice cozy nest to lay in. Then again she may just be playing at it. Not that far off now before the real stuff begins.

Miss Lydia this is the busiest time of the year for me and I have sold all my Christmas Geese (33).
And I am left with still around 50 geese.

O.K. Same song different verse. Now Lydia is sitting out in the middle of their run (which is pretty much nibbled down to nubs) and gathering up leaves around her. Sting is standing there watching her with his head cocked back and forth and Pauline is standing off in the corner keeping an eye to the sky. My these are interesting times on the farm. If she is building a nest in the run I think I should get rid of it and encourage her to keep building one in the pen don't you think. I would wait until they are put up for the night to get rid of any nest in the run. Oh, and this a.m. when I let them out to range Sting flew over the fence into the Cayuga run again and really was trying to get them. Luckily I was right there and could stop him but that entailed letting everyone out to the range at the same time and me running around trying to get between Sting and the ducks to get Sting back into their run.

As far as hatch day on my own goes, im not sure that it will be early. I am, however, 12 days away from an assisted hatch.

You should post some pics of the eggs you did last year since we have new members who haven't seen them. How's the new ones coming got them done yet?

I bet that was a hoot you need to video this stuff jtn Sting is feeling awfully protective. I'd wait till you put them up then take the nest outside up. Missy does this thing where she will be standing and pick things up around her and gather them at her feet, she started doing this at around 5 months old. She may just be getting ready to lay her first egg. Poor Pauline she needs her own mate. No one likes to play second fiddle.
