Here is my latest gosling hatched out several days ago. It had internally piped and I waited the whole day for it to externally pip. The next day nothing and the goslings was past due. So I opened the air cell for the gosling. Put it back and left it alone for the day. Still nothing. So I had to slowly start peeling shell off a little at a time. I peeled it all from the top of the egg and left the area around the yolk sack with shell on it. Put the gosling back for the day and nothing. This gosling was super weak. So I started peeling the membrane off that I left to keep it from bleeding. Then left it alone for another day. So finally I got the shell down to just covering the stomach area. Finally the gosling pulled out of that part. But the yolk sack was exposed. So I sprayed it with iodine took a fresh clean wash cloth and put super hot water on it and waited until cooler and wrapped the gosling up in it and put back into the incubator. Did this for that day and kept going in and baby was out of it so reheated it and wrapped up the gosling again until the next morning. Finally the gosling started to come around. The sack had finally went in and the gosling was showing more life. So just let it stay in there to get on it's feet better. Here are pictures taken 15 minutes ago. I sure hope this little one makes it....!!! It's almost how I hatched my duckling today! What a great idea the washcloth was. Did you use n incubator? I don't have one of those.... I sure hope this one makes it too! She is adorable! Maybe name her "Persistence" ....good job!

Oooh that is awesome I haven't met very many west virginians on here that close to me yet :) I got 5 dewlap toulouse eggs from lain Utah here and have 4 in lockdown - I can't believe I made it this far with them I have never incubated goose eggs before so I'm ecstatic to have 2 pipped :)

Me either! I went on the thread called "anyone in WV?" to try to meet people but they were too stuckup. Which is weird this state is supposed to be the most polite lol
Lain has nice geese. Now i know there is a place close by if i ever want dewlaps in the future ;)

I've been on that thread a couple times but not much - I've met one super nice person from our area and that's faykoko - she's from cross lanes and I got cream legbar eggs and Lavender Ameraucana eggs from her last summer and had an awesome hatch. I'm so glad to have met someone semi close with geese though so now i can drive you crazy with questions :) :)

Fayette County! Near the new River gorge bridge :)

Lots of memories from that area.  I've participated in the fair there in Summerville many times, white watered on the New & Camden, fished under the bridge (amazing bridge), boated in the lake and rode a steam engine along the New.  Old stomping grounds for me in the summers past.

Im in Charleston/Sissonville

And this also brings back memories as I used to date a girl by the name of Vivian M. from Sissonville.  She worked in Charleston at a small diner, but that was years and years ago, maybe 30-40 years ago!

That is so cool! I was born and raised here luckily my dad has 200 acres that border the Gauley River National Park :) My husband and I are about 2 months away from finishing our house that we have been building on my dad's property so I figured since we have the land and I already have around 75 chickens we needed to add some geese! Goats are next on the list once we get moved and settled in :)

You should check out the Yo Georgians thread. We've adopted people from as far away as Kansas, lmao!

Does anyone know if strawberry stems are ok for ducks and geese? I saw the post about strawberries, but what about the part we leave behind?
Mine eat them right off of the plant now, and don't spare any part of it. So I would guess yes.

HOWEVER, they don't like the actual strawberry leaves. The fruit and stems are fair game, the leaves will just make them turn their noses up.

I sure hope this little one makes it....!!!

Aww! Well if she's perking up, that sounds very promising! I hope she does make it!

And I agree with the name Persistence. Spirit is another good name, for one who has enough Spirit to push through. But doesn't someone here already have a goose named Spirit? (I have a cat named Spirit for very similar reasons, although not from birth, it was from abandonment). And keep in mind I have Hope, Miracle, and Wonder as names for mine. If it's a male, you can also go with Gladiator, Maximus, or Warrior, since he's clearly a fighter for his life. Siren is a good name for a female.

Or just look at Greek/Roman gods and goddesses for good names.

ON the wash cloth yes I used it in the incubator to help keep it warm. But if you do not have an incubator you could put it under a heat lamp and wrap it up. But make sure it is vey warm water and wet it good and make sure it is hot for you to touch wring out some and wrap the baby the whole baby up in it and put it down on the stomach...
