Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Any other cry babies here?

I wish I had known just how hard it really is emotionally when hatches don't turn out the way we want them to. Granted, I'd probably still do it, but, blah...

My little Goosie was internally pipped on Sunday, which was lockdown. Last night, it had cracked the external shell, and my hubby pulled some of the shell away. Tonight the membrane is finally broken, and I see beak, but, I also see blood. It is cheeping away pretty loudly, and I raised the humidity for them, as I still have hope that it's "nest" mate will hatch, tomorrow is hatch day.

I am so worried that the lil one inside isn't going to make it.

This is my 3rd hatch. My first one was chicks, failure. My second was chicks and two goslings (one gosling passed, so, the other went to a new home). 10 out of 23 chicks hatched, though 23 eggs made it to lockdown (too high heat, I assume, on a nearly dry hatch, 35-38% humidity 102° still air - my chicks were extremely huge.) Out of 10 eggs to hatch, 3 chicks died, one had to be assisted, and the 7 littles are fairly well. They have wings like grown ups, and are flying all over the barn, at two weeks old...? and still have yet to "trust" me.

Chickening and goosing, I reckon is NOT for the faint of heart. Hopefully, I will toughen up soon, cuz, I love incubating and hatching... (most parts any ways)!

Thanks for letting the crazy critter lady babble.

Good night!

Don't give up, the learning curve on hatching is brutal from what I have heard and read. I haven't gone through this yet, but I will be in your shoes next year, hatching chickens, ducks, and geese, or trying to anyway. And don't get upset about crying either, I bawled when my gosling died. I didn't hatch her out, but I still loved her very much and it hurt when she died.

Figured I'd share this photo of my 5 of my geese in 1 kiddie pool. What makes this even funnier is that we have been getting slammed with rain because of a big storm (hurricane) in the Gulf sending storm bands our way. My yard has been flooded 2 days in a row now. Yesterday I had a 5 inch deep pool in my back yard in less than 30 minutes! My laundry room flooded too, because of that. Anyway, here are my silly birds swimming in a pool when they have mud city to play in!

I also need help/advice. 1 of my youngest goslings is having leg trouble. She was limping badly, and her foot looked off, like it was twisted. I thought perosis and started treating her with a vitamin and mineral supplement. The limp has improved and she is able to walk farther now, but she isn't fully healed. I have also noticed that her legs look grey, not the orange/black of the other African goslings. Any idea what is wrong? How can I help her? She gets flockraiser feed, all the greens she wants, niacin and the poultry drench, so it can't be a defiency can it?

I know this is a duck, but had to share. I had my first experience with Blu-kote and lost. I used the spray on my duck's gashed toe with good success. But when I went to use the dauber to cover a small cut over her eye, well things got purple fast. My porch is purple, the shirts my hubby and I were wearing, my hands, and my hubby's chin all got it. And the duck! Well check out Daisy's new fashion till next molt.

Could it simply be that she´s injured it? Those babies are getting big now! Gorgeous! So is one of the younger chinese missing here? Or one of the older ones? Look much the same in size! How much and how often are you giving niacin now? don´t overdo it.

Been there done that, all but the chin. I'm thinking hers will wear off before yours. LOL

Snow is missing from the picture. As are the 2 youngest Africans. Snow will only share his pool with Jasmine when he wants practice! He runs everyone out when he gets in. The older geese only get niacin once a week or 2 now. When I see wobbly knees. The babies get it 2X a week because of Gertrude's problems. If it was an injury, why the strange grey color to her legs? And why the overnight improvement when I gave her the multivitamin and mineral supplement? If its not niacin, or perosis, what else could be wrong with her? I really don't want to lose her like I lost Tiny.

The hubby got some on his chin because Daisy pulled her head down and then way up out of my hands. When she went down I got the top of her head and some of her crest with the dauber, then her crest touched the hubby's chin and smeared him with purple. Lol. We are using all kinds of things to get the purple off, including orange goop, which is doing a good job actually. I should be purple free in another day or 2. I hope, lol. And I thought the purple stayed on till molt? Or is that just on chickens?

If you´re only giving her niacin twice a week, then you could up it to every day and see how she is after a few days. No idea about the leg colour. Maybe some Chinese fans could give you some insight on that, as to whether it happens sometimes, or whether it is a health thing.
