Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

It is hard to get male toulouse(pure orange beak and brown in colour) looking mixes
They always end up being female

males end up white or white with lavender or lavender
This is his sister: He had 4 pied sisters, 2 pied brothers.

The white one is his mum, the other is an auntie.
His mum was pure yellow when she was small, the other sisters pied. The parents were saddleback, both of them.

The 7th egg didn´t make it. The gosling had its headin the wrong place, as it didn´t pip. It was wriggling well, and then we noticed it had stopped. :( I opened the egg, but too late, she was gone. Blood vessels still in the membrane, so she should have pipped internally, but her head was tucked right down in. Such a shame. I did candle earlier, and no sign of her bill...so I thought not quite ready, maybe this egg was laid a bit late, etc etc... I wish I´d not been busy with other things, but there you go.... It was another female. That would have been 5 girls, 2 boys. And 100% fertility.
Other eggs are making noises under the Pilgrims, so soon... more gozzies!

Quote: Hi Livn,

you're a few days ahead of me - I'm hoping to see goslings this weekend. I'm not sure exactly when mine are due to hatch as I've been away a lot in the last few weeks (at dog trials). I have 3 geese sitting on at least 30 to 40 eggs between them. Most of them wont be fertile though as I only have one gander to 9 geese at the moment and he really has his favorites! I will brave life and limb once some have hatched to go in and candle some eggs.

I'm also having great fun (detect a hint of sarcasm) trying to keep the pen somewhat clean. We have had so much rain that all I have is mud (except where the geese have set up their nests). So my geese are more black than white at the moment!

Hopefully I'll have a few pics soon too.

Good grief, yours lay a lot more eggs than mine do! My older gnader has obliged his favourite, his No. 2, two new geese that I got, and a number of the yearlings!!!!!

He´s streaks ahead of the young ganders.

At the rate he´s going, he´ll be the father of everything out there!

I can imagine the mud! We had a good storm last night! Very welcome, though, have to say.
LB, sorry to hear about the last one, but congrats on the six precious babies.
Yes, so sad that it had died and I´d been too busy at the time to see what was happening, but there you go...it didn´t suffer, didn´t know anything........
Livin sorry to hear :-[
When is the goose going for her stroll
Already been out and about...within 10 minutes of taking her last egg away, she was out with the babies, but I´ve put a fence around them, and they´ll stay in there for 2 weeks. It´s a good size, they´ll be fine. She´s so protective of them, puts herself between me and them, neck stretched out, etc, just like my Pils the first year, but she´ll learn, and I´ll be picking them up soon...

Do you have any birds of prey e.g Crows?!
No crows here. The only birds to be careful with are the carcará hawks, but they pose a greater danger to my muscovy ducklings when the ducks aren´t being attentive, but usually the ducks are good protectors, and can see them off, especially when the hawks see me running down the hill toward them!
I keep them penned in about 5m2 or more so that I can feed them well, as I have lost them in the past when they´ve been wandering about. At two weeks they´re much stronger and they can go off with their parents free-range.
