Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

LB, they are stinking adorable! They are Cayuga Ancona crosses, so they are mostly dark colored. The parents are from my first hatch ever, so their babies are extra special to me. I am sure we will keep at least a couple of them.

P, I found it very weird that she laid an egg! I have not gotten any fall season eggs before from her, or any of my geese for that matter. But I also find it weird that my Cayuga, who will be 3yo in January, never went broody before and here she is hatching babies in October.

Wonder what it all means?? lol

Well we have geese splashing, honking and running around in circles simultaneously all around the globe. We have 3 year old ducks that have never shown interest in parenthood suddenly going broody and hatching out babies. I have ducks trying to mate with chickens and a little rooster that just can't get crowing down (sounds like an old record...scratchy).

Obviously it is the end of life as we know it.

So, what do you think life as we DON'T know it will be like?

Oh and I was given permission to do a small bird order so I ordered a bunch of Bantams...

In the past Missy is the one who instigates mating here.
I know this might be a silliy question, but what is mating behavior with geese? is it the same as muscovies? should I keep a look out for my two? how did you figure out that Sam has a "victory call" seems really funny to hear about =)

The weather here has gone very cold yet still dry (dryest and sunniest september over 50 years

) but i see a lot of foxes around too which i don't like at all ! Besides i don't like the feeling of winter approching :S
we have had record breaking rain fall all year. last month we had 18in of rain and we average around 6. It is also cold. I know Florida isnt extreme like most places, but when your used to Fl. weather is it extreme. =) I hate the grey days and cold. Give me 100 feet of snow or rain and day as long as the sun is out!

Well life as We don't know it probably means we'll be the ones being put up at night so the preds don't eat us and our flocks will be sitting inside on the recliners watching TV. or using the computer.

Mating behavior in geese isn't like ducks. the gander usually waits for a signal from the goose that she will accept mating, If Missy doesn't want to mate she gets out of the pool when Sam starts to nibble on her. lol and the yell once you've heard it is very recognizable.Maybe someone on here can video it with sound I am too illiterate on a computer to do it.

This morning I heard the victory yell again and hurried up the hill to see but it was too late by then it was over I know he's mating one of the gozzies but don't know which yet.

I would love someone to video it. What breed is Sam? When you catch the gozie he is mating with, You will have a confirmed sex for at least one of them =)

I have been leaving Forest outside separated inside the duck run for a few hours at a time during the day. I put the duck that loves her and Oliver in the run. That way she can start to get used to them without being pecked. She still isnt happy, yesterday she honked so loud over and over until we came and got her. She was perfectly fine, just didnt want to be alone without her humans. Daisy (muscovy) loves her. She is the one that has always loved her. She tries to preen her, walk next to her and yesterday she smashed herself up against the bars of the crate Forest was in to get as close to her as possible. Forest is afraid of her. She IS starting to reply to Ollie's gozie chatter. I put mirrors up inside like you suggested. She will get there slowly. =)

If they are as good to us as we are to them that might not be such a bad future after all.

A combination of both Golden and Silver Sebright Bantams. I only ordered 8 from Ideal Poultry which is only 300 miles away so it is an overnight delivery/shipment. They are due to hatch/ship on the 8th. Ideal routinely puts extra birds in when the weather starts getting cold at night like it is now so I may get some surprises. I just hope that they don't put large chicks in with the Bantam chicks and squash the little banty birds. I will post some pictures as soon as I get them settled into their brooder (which I am trying to rig right now) then I have to come up with some sort of coop just for them since I will not be putting them in with my big girls (little fat Wyandottes and Rocks). They will have their own run (about 10 x 40) and covered since I have read that they are quite able to fly.

Sebrights are so pretty too. Look forward to seeing them.

Forest will get there your doing a great job with her. and the fact that she is talking to Oliver is a good step forward. I am amazed about your Scovy though taking to Forest when she has Scovy's too bond with. That is sweet.
I have a game camera and I am going to set it up facing the pool [when it stops raining] that way I'll have some pics of who what and when lol

Good idea. Sometimes when I hear the gander gloat I go out to see who´s mated with whom, but often I´m too late. However, I got to realise that the goose that´s still in the water having a bath is the one that´s just been mated. Surprising at such a young age, but it seems strange things are happening in the waterbird world.....
