Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

When I was putting the camera on the tree Sam was watching me like he knew exactly what I was doing, and that thought went through my head, but if mating is offered to him I don't think the camera will enter his mind

What may happen is Missy will walk up to the camera and spread her wings over the camera so nothing can be filmed, kinda like what happens in the pool stays in the pool lol
Today I was looking out the window and there is Sam standing on one foot sleeping up by the pool all of a sudden he wakes up looks around and realizes he is alone takes off looking for his family, This happens often the other 3 take off while he is resting and when he wakes up he'll holler till Missy hollers back to let him know where they are.

Last year my dh hooked up faucets in 3 different places so I can have a hose where the pools are just for using the spring water. That was a huge help.
Ah, that´s great to have hoses like that. I´ve mentioned it to mine, but he´s doing other stuff, so I carry it for now....
Funny about Sam and the others sneaking off... like the old grandad falling asleep and waking up to find everyone´s gone off...
I reckon what you´ll get on the camera is the sound of a yell of triumph, and the pic will be Missy investigating the camera...

LB, wonderful pics. Love seeing babies free ranging with their parents. :)

P, hope you can find out what is happening in the kiddy pool. Would you believe that another goose has started laying now, too? So weird.

We have a spring and well, we only use the well in winter after the spring freezes, have to be so careful with our ground water.

keeping over 40 birds in still-water pools would be impossible! I´m back to carrying their water down for them. I carry the clean water from the well down the hill to give to the babies so it´s all really nice and clean.
you reminded me of that old song jack and jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water! havent thought of that since since my son was a baby! do you ever sell your birds? we were thinking of it if we ever got layers, but im not sure if i would be okay with them going to someone i didnt know. sounds stupid, more people around here would want them for food than a pet which i dont like the idea of.

but i also tried to foster dogs and ended up with six because i was afraid they wouldnt get a good enough home =)

Here is the pic of the bath tub my husband brought home for us. lol it was fun assembling all that stuff we had laying around. give a new meaning to "re-purposing materials =)
As soon as the weather is nice enough and my husband has time, it will get moved to its right spot. Forest is looking into the bath and one of the cuyuga's are in it. it is funny how scared they are of change. I had Ollie in it at first. he was following the food bucket, walked right up the ramp and into the tub without knowing it! once the tub is put in its permanent place, i know that the birds will love it!

Do you they know something we don´t???!!!!

I can imagine you could get through a lot water! ....and money! But, to be honest, they don´t need masses of water. You know those cement mixing trays? One of those will do them fine for a splash, and a bucket of water for them to put their heads into...could also put some grains in the bottom of the bucket, along with grit or gravel for them to nibble at... and then give them their kiddie pool just at the weekend, for example.
If we did not have our well there is no way I could have the ducks and geese here in west Texas.
We have our well, 3 springs and a stream that runs through. Thank goodness we do, or we´d also not have the birds.
A lot of wells and springs around here have dried up due to lack of rainfall, and some people that used to have geese, even cattle, don´t have them anymore. We seem to have just happened to have found a good spot here.

Yes, they get spooked by anything different!

I sell my birds, but mostly through recommendation. Last week I had a couple turn up at the gate that I met a couple of months back in the feedstore, and they´ll be coming back in a couple of weeks to take a pair on. I´m conffident they´ll take good care of them. They have a couple of daughters so they´ll love the geese. They´re getting it all prepared and safe at home first.

I also sold a goose to the owner of the feedstore, as a gander suddenly turned up at his pond (I reckon someone dumped it there, very strange), and he wanted a mate for the gander. Now he wants two more, as he thinks they´re great. He has a large lake, so the other two will be fine, too. Another month and the goslings will be well feathered, so they´ll go to him then. His gander will adopt them. The goose has just lost her eggs to a tegu lizard, so she´ll probably be sitting again by then. She´s only a year old, so maybe nothing will come of it anyway, so that´s why he wants two more youngsters from me.

People around here like them to make the place look pretty, or for guard geese, as people seem to be more wary of geese than dogs!

Will the bath be sunk into the ground?

btw, I often think of the Jack and Jill song!

Very good looking fellow. Are Embden larger than Toulouse? We lucked out when we bought this place. There is a nice deep well and we are on the water shed side of a hill so our well recharges when it does rain. Also, the people that had the house before put faucets in all over the place. I have three out with my birds so saves my back. There is not so good also. The house is almost 100 years old, has 10 foot ceilings and we are so far out we depend on LPG. We learned last winter that LPG costs too much to use for heat so we had an insert put in the fireplace that blows heat out into the house. We have city water along with the well so it seems they could have run a natural gas line out here too.
