Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Living that is great news about the gosling
Yes, after losing the other one I couldn´t believe another was gone, and then the egg was dead too! The baby went out with its mum once it was on its feet, but it´s back in tonight to make sure nothing happens to it, then it´ll be back out with her tomorrow. The mum´s with her sister goose who has just one gosling of 2 weeks, so this one can pal up with the 2-wk-old. They´ll be fine.
We had a storm over the weekend and it was strong! But no damage thank goodness, then 4 days ago we had a thunderstorm that lasted two days and the amount of lightning was unreal! Had now power for 3 days and 20,000 other people in the south didn't either due to lightning so no wifi :E Anyway one of my geese was sick but is now recovering
We keep waiting and hoping for storms, and nothing comes. The little stream at the bottom for the geese is running very slowly. We really need some tropical storms, and seems you guys are getting them...minus the heat, I suppose! I haven´t heard anything these days from my friend in Wexford,, so maybe they were affected...
What was wrong with your goose?

Boy I bet they are tiny, sorry you lost one.
Not even 1/3 the size of a regular chick. It is never easy to loose a little bird but when they are so small it just seems worse. I just hope we make it through tonight then we should be ok. They say the first 48 hours or so are the highest risk. I got these as my "hobby" chickens. Just something that is small and pretty and fun.

I´ve never had any of my geese behave like Missy, they usually follow the gander into the pool if they´re ready. If they´re already in the pool and the gander goes in, but they don´t want to mate, they´re out in a jiffy! Does Toots flatten her back for Sam? Do you see that at all with Babe?
It sounds like geese mating is so much more complicated than muscovy mating! It is really cool that you double checked on the gosie and saved him! i hope he makes it. keep updating us with pics and it sound like your right on the ball with checking them everyday to make sure it all works out. something must have scared her.

Thanks for the advice, I will treat the cayugas with the same ratios as the muscovies.

Just far more graceful.

Unless, of course, it´s Missy and Sam!

Banties are certainly fun. I used to have some, and the chicks are diminutive. The banty hens are such superb mothers. I didn´t keep mine, as the busy little cockbird used to chase off my bigger cock to breed with the bigger hens! Well, I didn´t want that. Even shutting him in didn´t make a difference, he´d always find his way into the bigger ladies!!!! But such a character! He went to live free-range on another farm with his little Banty family

How is the miracle baby doing ? if she lives , you should call her Elsa. She is a very popular and loved Disney character from the movie Frozen. Her magical gift is being able to live and be comfortable in the ice cold (she makes an ice castle) and she can freeze anything with her hands. Since the gosie lived through almost freezing to death I thought it might fit her. =)

Oh yes Wexford was effected by the thunderstorms also and my gander was losing weight all of a sudden and no idea what was wrong but feeding him extra gave his weight back

She´s doing fine. I taped her legs today as she´s also spraddle-legged, so she´s a bit stumbly as she gets used to it, but she should be fine in a short time. She spent last night indoors with her mirror, and now she´s back out with her mom so they can spend some bonding time together.
To me, Elsa is a lioness... different generation!

I believe it was the second film I ever went to see, and I loved the story. OK, her name´s Elsa, then.
Elsa´s doing fine so far, thank you. Will take pics later.

I have to get organised, as a pair of the older goslings are going to a new home this week. I must go and band them, so I can the difference. They´re all getting their flights in now, and soon I won´t know which is which.
Oh, and a couple of the males are just starting to show a lot of grey in their wings, so maybe Serv´s right about the 'lavender'. Just a little longer and they´ll have their feathers in.
