Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

you better haven't seen much of your little ones lately, err probably not so little anymore.
Already sold a lot of them. And some adults too, but the little pieds are still here, I´ll try to take pics, but we´re rather pushed for time these days. My two imprinteds go this weekend, too.
I always hate it, I think no-one else will look after them like I do, but of course, they do.
I sold two pairs recently with a gosling each pair, (one is Elsa, she´s doing great) and I was so worried about how they´d be, especially Elsa being so young, but today I drove past them in their new place, happy as anything out in the middle of a field. They´re fine.

How many have you sold? I'm glad you were able to see Elsa and she is enjoying her new home. I've never sold a goose before but just the few Muscovy's I've sold has been so hard. I don't know if i can hold out another year with out letting anyone hatch anything so I maybe selling some next year. I keep threatening to sell my drakes but even when I put them on BYC and Craigslist no one was interested in them so I guess their here to stay. If we could have just all ducks hatch one year. lol

I forgot you all are in Spring very busy time of year.

Yes I know it is crazy this was a pic first day I got them and the second one is from today

They are almost as big as my pekins and turkey hens
Nearly fully feathered just have the tiniest bit of down on them
Have they become the terrors of the barn yard? Boy my 4 rule the roost over here.

Remember those 13 ducklings? Sold all but one, she´s grey...just one grey out of the 13. And ALL females! Unbelievable!
So far I´ve sold 4 adults and 14 goslings. I´m now back down to around 20, but still have some more going to new homes next week. And, yet again, I have far more females than males. I´m selling them in pairs mainly, so will have a surplus again of females, but better that way around! ;)

That's so nice your able to find good homes for them all, and ALL females how do you do that?? lol

I have alway said that livin is a miracle worker. All female babies, selling them like hotcakes, uses desk lamps for incubators, what's next? Seriously though, I can't even give away my drakes or roosters and you are selling hand over fist. That is great! Wish I was close enough to buy from you.

I read somewhere, and I´ve posted this thought before, and others have also agreed with it, that:
In waterfowl, it´s the females that 'decide' the sex of the offspring, by how well they eat. Has to do with something in their diet, but I just can´t remember what it is. The earlier babies can be more likely to be male, the later ones female. I usually take away the first eggs, and leave the geese to brood the later eggs. I try to get it that they start to sit later in the year, by taking their early eggs. I also try to make sure they get plenty of food leading up to the breeding season. And it seems to work out. Both geese and ducks. But I have to say, 13 females is astonishing! They were all differing sizes, so I thought for sure some would be males, but no. Last time I let this duck raise ducklings, she had 5 females and just one male.
Oh, and the geese that tend to produce more females, I let them keep more eggs. :) There´s some science in there somewhere, but not sure exactly where! ;)
