Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

I can just see one of mine trying to fit in one of the chicken nest boxes. It would be like trying to put 50 lbs of mud in a 5 lb sack. Just would not work.:lau

Lol, I did not think the geese could get in there. 1 of the ducks, little Ebony regularly gets in the chicken nest boxes to lay her eggs, but none of the Cayuga ducks seemed interested until today. The nest boxes sit on concrete blocks and and only has a 6-8 inch ledge with the pole running in front, there isn't a lot of room for a large goose to climb in! That goose was very determined to get in there. There was a lot of the bedding on the ground in front of the boxes, so she must have made many attempts before succeeding, lol. I don't have the heart to move her just yet, I'll move her this afternoon if she is still squeezed in there.

Very busy. I finally can take a breath. Both of my sons managed to crack teeth, my youngest has a tooth that is completely missing, which has caused problems with his jaw growth, so he is getting ready for some major work to try and correct the issue. My eldest son just needs braces to straighten his teeth. Both boys were on the football team, and the eldest is on the soccer team. My youngest has started coming back to dog training with me. I managed to find the perfect home for Fiona the Rottweiler I rescued, then I ended up rescuing a kitten that I am trying to find a home for. 2 of my dogs, Dawn and Phantom take their CGC test next week. Dawn is ready for competition level agility training. Phantom is finally ready to show, so in January I am taking him to his first show. Rascal is doing extremely well in competition obedience, and Sasha has been promoted to agility demo dog and obedience demo dog. Dawn, Phantom, and Sasha are all currently on the agility demo team, and we had a major demo the Saturday before Halloween. My BO and BA hens have decided they want to hatch babies just like the goose pictured, so I have to fight them everyday to collect eggs. My life has been completely taken over by my kids and animals, lol.

P.S. We are getting a new puppy Dec 13. She will be 2 weeks old this Saturday and she is the most adorable Siberian Husky pup I have seen in a long time.
So busy, just got worn out reading how busy. lol
You'll have to post pics of your new puppy we like to see babies no matter what species they are. Congrats on getting to the demo team that's awesome. One day you need to post a video..I love to do videos now. LOL

I read somewhere, and I´ve posted this thought before, and others have also agreed with it, that:
In waterfowl, it´s the females that 'decide' the sex of the offspring, by how well they eat.  Has to do with something in their diet, but I just can´t remember what it is.   The earlier babies can be more likely to be male, the later ones female.  I usually take away the first eggs, and leave the geese to brood the later eggs.  I try to get it that they start to sit later in the year, by taking their early eggs.  I also try to make sure they get plenty of food leading up to the breeding season.  And it seems to work out.  Both geese and ducks.  But I have to say, 13 females is astonishing!  They were all differing sizes, so I thought for sure some would be males, but no.  Last time I let this duck raise ducklings, she had 5 females and just one male.
Oh, and the geese that tend to produce more females, I let them keep more eggs.  :)  There´s some science in there somewhere, but not sure exactly where!  ;)

That is very interesting Theory because the very first gosling i raise (born first in the year) have always been males.
This year i incubated 2 eggs that were laid extra early and i incubated both and one was the first egg of the year and both were males ( Chip and his brother) but this is just a Theory but very interesting theory.

As ye know (people that did the hatchalong with me) i crossed a BrownAfrican with a Embden and see the out come because no one knew what the cross looked like and out of all the eggs that hatched ,there was 7 males and two females.
Atleast we now know that this is a autosexing cross but it produces a lot of males!

I noticed today that one of my geese is missing :/
Only noticed it when i brought them in :/
I don't know if a fox took it or if it is still out in one of the fields but i was in every field and saw notting but i will confirm tomorrow.
I only noticed it missing because it is one of the incubated crosses of this year, and he does not know the dangers of nature but i will see tommorrow.

No sign of it anywhere and i last night i went in my 3rd field and shone my torch and saw a fox running around so i thought he did not make it for sure so what i have done this morning i locked my last few field (even though i should have done it ages ago) i think it was gone a couple of days ago because i remmber on Wednesday the geese were in the first field (i found it odd, they never stay in the first field at midday but it was probely because the fox got hold of the gander letting all the geese run or fly home fast as possible .
