A lady called me and said that her 6 week old gosling (she has 3 of them) is sitting for long periods of time and has a difficult time standing. She said that the gosling continues to preen itself and talks back and forth with its siblings. She said that it will walk a short distance but then plops down on the ground and does not move. She said that it eats grass like the others.
I asked the normal questions like.
1. Is she eating and drinking? She said yes. She said that the gosling still has a great appetite.
2. I asked her could it have gotten into any poison, eaten dead/rotten carcass, mold, sewage, etc.? (possible botulism) She said no, they don't use poisons or chemicals in their yard and they would have
smelled any rotten carcasses.
3. I asked her could if have been attacked by a predator and has an injury? She said no.
4. I asked her when did this behavior begin? She said today.
5. I asked her what did the poop look like? She said that the poop looks great. Looks the same as the others.
6. I asked did she check the bottom of feet and legs for cuts, scrapes, bruises? She said yes and nothing visible.
7. I asked about the feed. They are feeding non-medicated crumble and they are also eating grass.
8. I asked about their feathers. She said they are still feathering out. Not fully feathered yet.
They are housed on their back patio which is safe and secure. They got the gosling when they were a couple of weeks old. No illness, signs symptoms, Gosling were perfectly healthy. All of them are growing rapidly. Just the one is having problems walking. They other 2 are perfectly healthy.
I have no other ideas what could be wrong with the gosling. Anyone ever experience this before? What other questions should I ask her to help her out. I have never had any geese or gosling illnesses, so I have no idea what could be wrong with her gosling.
I told her that it could be just a sprained leg or foot being as though it's eating, drinking, preening and everything else, except unable to walk for long periods of time.
Any help would be appreciated. I told her that I would try my best to help her out.
Thanks.
