A lady called me and said that her 6 week old gosling (she has 3 of them) is sitting for long periods of time and has a difficult time standing. She said that the gosling continues to preen itself and talks back and forth with its siblings. She said that it will walk a short distance but then plops down on the ground and does not move. She said that it eats grass like the others.

I asked the normal questions like.

1. Is she eating and drinking? She said yes. She said that the gosling still has a great appetite.
2. I asked her could it have gotten into any poison, eaten dead/rotten carcass, mold, sewage, etc.? (possible botulism) She said no, they don't use poisons or chemicals in their yard and they would have
smelled any rotten carcasses.
3. I asked her could if have been attacked by a predator and has an injury? She said no.
4. I asked her when did this behavior begin? She said today.
5. I asked her what did the poop look like? She said that the poop looks great. Looks the same as the others.
6. I asked did she check the bottom of feet and legs for cuts, scrapes, bruises? She said yes and nothing visible.
7. I asked about the feed. They are feeding non-medicated crumble and they are also eating grass.
8. I asked about their feathers. She said they are still feathering out. Not fully feathered yet.

They are housed on their back patio which is safe and secure. They got the gosling when they were a couple of weeks old. No illness, signs symptoms, Gosling were perfectly healthy. All of them are growing rapidly. Just the one is having problems walking. They other 2 are perfectly healthy.

I have no other ideas what could be wrong with the gosling. Anyone ever experience this before? What other questions should I ask her to help her out. I have never had any geese or gosling illnesses, so I have no idea what could be wrong with her gosling.

I told her that it could be just a sprained leg or foot being as though it's eating, drinking, preening and everything else, except unable to walk for long periods of time.

Any help would be appreciated. I told her that I would try my best to help her out.

Thanks.

could be a niacin issue since they didnt mention feeding a waterfowl starter or giving niacin suppliment. Brewers yeast and niacin pills are two easy ways to add it in daily if they chose to feed chick starter in place of waterfowl starter. Some goslings just need more to be stable than its siblings and can go down hill quickly if the suppliment isnt started and kept up with daily

Who knows how the goslings were fed before she got them. Is she feeding just a chick starter instead of waterfowl growth feed. Because chick started does not have the same ingredient in it as the waterfowl growth feed. Plus the need niacin makes sure to tell her this.....

Thank you all so much. I will call her right now and get specifics on feed and share the info that you have shared with me. I hope this will help her. I will keep you all posted.

Thank you!!!

I just talked to her and she said that she feeds them a medicated chick starter. She doesn't know the name because she is not home. What type of feed shall I tell her to feed them. I have always used Purina Flockraiser for my gosling and I have never had a problem like she has but if there is a feed that she needs to feed them, please let me know so that I can tell her. A lot of these small time feed stores down here will not have the "special" feeds that other feed stores have. I'm sure the choices will be limited.

I vote for Flock raiser if types of feed is limited, and a niacin supplement till lil one is up walking good again. 100-150 mgs to 1 gallon of water. plain niacin not flush free, or brewers yeast sprinkled on top of feed if it's eating good. I don't think I'd be feeding medicated anything,

I know that some medicted chick starters have an ingredient that is bad for water fowl, perhaps this is a clue.. I also feed flock raiser and never had a problem but my geese and gosling range in the field more than they eat the flock raiser.

Talked to the lady last night to find out the name of the feed that she had been feeding the gosling and she said that there wasn't a name on the bag. The feed store had sold her a "brown" bag of feed with no name on it, no nutritional information. NO NOTHING! I held my breath after she said that. OMG!!!! She has no idea what she has been feeding them. She relied on the feed store to sell her feed without her having any knowledge of what to buy or feed. She could have been feeding them horse feed for all we know. I told her to STOP feeding them the mysterious feed IMMEDIATELY. She followed my advice and had already purchased the Flockraiser crumble. I also mentioned to her what you all suggested about the Niacin and Brewer's Yeast. She had purchased that and had given it to them. She also said that the feed store tried to sell her (and she bought a bag) of GAME BIRD FEED. I was speechless again. I asked her what was the protein percentage. After minutes of trying to locate it, she said that percentage was 30 %. I told her DO NOT feed that to those babies. I explained that the protein was too high for them. I explained that I only feed game bird feed to my poults and I allow my turkeys to have such a high protein. I asked her if she knew what angel wing was and she said no. I explained that to her.

So now it's just a waiting game. :/

It's a good thing you were able to help her, just another confirmation that just because someone works at a feed store doesn't mean they know a hill of beans about feed, or anything else pertaining to animals. I hope her goslings will be okay.

Yes, I'm glad that she called me and I told her to call me for anything relating to those babies. And you are right about just because they work at a feed store doesn't mean they know too much about feed. I try to tell animal owners the same thing. I told her that I would check with her daily until her gosling is walking around with no problems.
