Got a free roo- can some one tell me what he is?

I was figuring that that would be due to him being a poor quality specimen from a hatchery?

It could be..... and he may be one, but I'm not convinced.

i completely agree! Partridge rocks dont have that feathering that he has in the front (the brown and black) the spangled appearence YOTR was talking about

And see, that's one of my other favorite breeds!

Here's a picture of my Welsummer roo JR at the end of Sept. 09 when he was about 4 months old--not the best picture, but you can see his coloring.

I'll try to take one in the next couple of days. He's not looking his best because today he got into it with our little Cochin roo, Tater, and Tater almost got the best of poor JR. I had to put some BluKote on his head near his comb which was bleeding. JR's a good fellow. These two have sparred before and this was the first time either ended up getting bloody. They have separate quarters now.

Here are some pics of my Welsummer roosters. They are a bit younger than yours, but I think you will see the similarity.

Axel, at about 18 weeks.

Beauregard, about the same age...

Another guy, maybe 16 weeks?

Not all Welsummer roos have the mottled breast, but they are supposed to.

Feather colour denotes variety, NOT breed. Most varieties occur in many breeds; most breeds come in many varieties. As Year Of The Rooster said, he isn't quite partridge. His leg colour is correct for plymouth rock, but I don;t know the breed well enough to say whether he has correct type or other characteristics.

When you get a free bird, the best way to find out what it is is to ask the person from whom you received it. "WOW! Thanks! He's gorgeous! What breed is he? Oh thanks! Now I need to see about getting him some ______ girls."

Unfortunately I wasn't able to do that because the people who I got him from didn't know what he is.

But yes, thank you for all the input and answers everyone, I appreciate it. I'm not going try and show him, or even use him to breed pure bred chickens, so knowing he looks kind a like a Welsummer-ish bird is good enough for me. I like him, he's not mean (so far), and he's pretty.
