Got a free "skeleton coop"(Lots of progress!)

If you want to go cheap try craigslist. We built our coops from pallets for free. You can take them apart for you wood part of the roof. I have also seen shingles free or cheap even if you have to use different colors you could make it cute. If you don't see them ask! Shingles will be heavy! A metal roof would maybe lighter but harder to cut if needed. They also make a plastic roofing like metal might be easier to cut. Looks like you are doing a fine job so far....don't let the roof get the better of you:cool:

It's looking good! Were are new chicken parents and are almost finished w/ our coop

We are just down the road from you in Browns Summit! This is a great website, check out their coop designs, that's how we got started w/ ours

Oh wow, Browns Summit IS close! My horseshoer lives there, actually, LOL.

I'm not too worried about how heavy the roof is, as the whole structure is very heavy and very solid- I think it'll hold whatever I throw at it. I'm thinking about using wood beams and them screwing the plastic sheeting over top. I think I saw the sheeting in white. The biggest problem is getting it into my little car! They won't cut it at Lowes, and I can't cram an 8 ft long piece of plastic in the car!

First thing as far as the roof goes is to add at least one more rafter on each side. That would put them approximately 2' on center. If you added two more per side they would be 16" O/C +-. I would add two per side, deck it with 1/2 plywood and finish with whatever you have or want. If you choose a metal roof, omit the plywood and install purlins at the top, middle and bottom of the rafters to attach the metal. A purlin is a cross member made of wood, in this case, 1X4 or 1X3 that attach perpendicular to the rafters.
