So yesterday morning around 6:30am I got the call from my post office that my order of chicks had arrived.
The order was for:
3 light brown leghorn pullets
3 white leghorn pullets
1 australorp pullet
3 gold sebrights
3 silver sebrights
2 buff laced polish
Amazingly enough there was not a single dead chick in the box. This was my first shipment, and I was certain it would be a disaster when I opened the box. But no, everyone was alive, yay!
Unfortunately, the three gold sebrights were kinda weak and shaky, and two seemed a little spraddle legged, the third was REALLY spraddled.
I left the two healthier ones alone except for giving them some electrolytes, and I tried using the band-aid method to fix the other one's legs. He was really weak, though and just laid around the brooder. When I got up this morning he had died.
So far the rest seem to be doing okay, though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the little sebright will be the only loss.
On another note, I can't believe how tiny and helpless these guys are! I guess, because I had bought all of my other chicks at a feedstore where they were a few days to a week older, I didn't realize how wobbly and little they are right after they hatch.
It's cute, but really scary because they look so fragile!
