Update!!!

Went to Moooresville to see inlaws this weekend, came back and one of our dark cornish bulldog pullets croaked. Must have happened when we were gone. Now im down to one pullet and one hen and a roo of same. Hope no more die. Sort of sad, because they are my meat birds for next year. Ill incubate their chicks and sell the chicks, but keep some for meaties.

Sad state of affairs.

After one hen died, it was a while before another hen died. somehow, I don't know how, but she died. no disease, no attack marks....nuttin.

Then tragically, Rooster Cogburn got stomped on my our tom turkey and he was doomed before I got to him.He had a seizure in my arms and died. The turkey found a nice home in freezer camp.

So we are down to only one dark Cornish hen. Tragic tales of Pallet Pullet Palace.

We still have a lot more hens, but only one DC.

I wanted to have a hen pen of only one of each kind of chicken, what is bad about that is that you lose one and you are out that kind of breed. I bought a hard to find blue laced red wyanndotte, and a hawk got her.

I had the foresight to get two naked necks, then my favorite one had a planting bucket flip on her and I only had one naked neck left. so I was glad I bought 2.

Gmendoza,
I sure hate to hear that .I was hoping you would get a good flock going.
Maybe you can find a rooster before it is too late and get a start yet.
You never know what may happen ,it could even have been a snake bite
that got them

Gimmie birdies
you are right about only getting one of a kind but even getting two or three you never know if they will make it .Wish you luck on the one you have

It wasn't a snake bite either. How would I know without necropsy?

We use DE in the henhouses. Curious thing about DE that I found out and how it relates to snakes.

We never have had snakes in the hen houses after we used DE. this stuff has such fine particles, as many here may know, that when a snake comes across it DE will creep between their scales. When the DE is between their scales it is so abrasive that it will tear the scales off causing the snake extreme pain trying to endure slithering on the ground with no scales. it would have to go back to its den until its next molt to get new scales.

So the lesson of the day, kiddies:

no DE = snakes
DE = no snakes

Thus endith thy lesson for thy day.
