Got Flogged by A rooster tonight

Somehow I feel you will get it handled in a quick and resolute fashion.

Since we're newbies, we bought a trio of Red Sex Links (or Golden Comets, I forget which) from our local feed store. Been eggsellent layers, altho one of em has been laying washed out, almost white, eggs since they've been moulting. They'll be 2 years in April so she may be playing out already. Not sure which one it is.

Could be............ Hatchery stock can burn out in 2-3 yrs easy, a pale egg is a good sign the pigment gland is losing it's ability to produce color or it could be the molt. You should know after the molt. so what happens when your hen's get spent ??.

That's what I thought. They get plenty of calcium via their own shells and oyster shells free choice. Plenty of meat protein via free ranging for some time each day (until the snow sets in good) and I give them all leftover chicken carcasses, etc. in addition to their laying pellets free choice. Periodically toss a handful of game bird conditioner. They're beginning to come out of moult now - not seeing anywhere near the feathers around - but still looking scruffy. We decided when we got them that we would only keep three or four at a time for eggs, knowing full well that they don't lay as long as heritage breeds (I stalked on this site for probably a full year before we got them, soaking up all the information and wisdom I could

) and when they are done, they will feed us or the dog; one. Since we only have room for a few, they need to earn their keep -- eggs or legs -- in return for having had a life no battery hen ever dreamed of. We only have 1 pet and it's our dog.

I was delighted to read this thread as I have similar problem with "Elvis" who is silver spangled appenzeller, he's only little but he is very good at the kicks and my legs look like a pin cushion, I have taken the tips off his barbs with the

dog claw clippers but that doesn't help with the bruising. I also have resorted to boot assisted flying which makes no difference, I have also tried the water pistol, the hose pipe, a bucket of water, carrying him around, the only thing

which I could not try, which I was told by a farmer worked with his, was throwing it into the middle of a pond and making it swim back, my pond is only small. I have however discovered that if I put on my riding chapps which protect my

lower legs and follow him around he gives up quite quickly realising that he's having no affect, not a good look with shorts but better than having to wear dark tights all summer! He's only young so may improve with age but he's far to

pretty to put into the pot!
