Got home from the feed store and SHOCK they gave me medicated feed!

Quote:
I will probably end up going to the feed store tomorrow and getting a bag of non-medicated... I just feel more comfortable with that... and I plan to move my babies outside with the hens pretty soon, sooner that I would be able to go through a whole bag of feed. So since we do eat the eggs and it's not good for the hens to eat it, It is probably just best to switch back to non medicated.

Thanks all for the advice.

Chick starter is not to be fed to laying hens because it does not have the calcium they need for egg production. Amprolium in the feed will not hurt the eggs at all so there is no danger in feeding it; it just doesn't have what a hen needs.

Amprolium is a thiamine blocker, not harmful at all, but it's not strong enough in the dose they put in the starter to guarantee they won't get coccidiosis anyway, so you can feed medicated or not, but watch for signs of cocci.

thank you Cynthia. Very helpful.
