Got my babies today! 5.5 week pics pg 4 (dial up warning!)

Haha! Ok! I will have to add a dial up warning in my title.

I took pics of all of them....headshot and profile, so I could study the facial and body characteristics and make some gender guesses. (It's too hard to do it with them running around the brooder! Hahaha!)

Some have names, most don't. My plan was to have two pens set up for them and keep as many as I can since I just love the little fuzz-butts. I want all the silkie hens and frizzle cochin hens in one pen with two or three silkie roos (or as many get along without fighting) and all my smooth cochin hens in a pen with my frizzle roo(s). I'm working towards sizzles, but also wanted to have pure silkies and cochins as well, and figure this is the best way to do it. The only problem I have is that leaves my smooth cochin roos out if I want to have the highest potential for frizzles. And my Fabio (Fabulous) is a smooth.

That and I don't want to over breed my hens and I don't have that many smooth hens. But we will see. I knew I was going to have to rehome some, I didn't want 30 to begin with, but it was the minimum order from the hatchery. Sigh.....

Pics coming as soon as I can get them on PB!

Ok, I hope this is not going to be too confusing, and that I don't accidentally add repeats!

Any guesses on gender of the silkies (I know it's way early) would be great!

Yeah! I love all the photos! Thanks for uploading them and sharing! I wish I had room for more Cochins.

I don’t have any silkie experience to give you an educated guesses on any of them. I think it is still early to tell. All I know about sexing silkies is to look for a swept back pouf on males and rounded pouf on females. However, they sure are cute!

I think most of my guesses on the Cochins mirror your thoughts on the gender.

With my Cochins, the cockerels had stubby tails, feathered in slower on the wing bows, and turn red red in the comb and got larger combs between 4 and 7 weeks. However, I could not use waddles to tell gender because some of my pullets showed pink on the waddles at 5 weeks. Post a link to this thread in the "What breed or Gender" forum and you’ll have lots of better guess than mine. If you give them one more week, I bet you will know most genders on the cochins for sure.

For a comparison, here are some of my bantam black cochin chicks from last summer:

Both Black cockerels at six weeks:

These 3 turned out to be Pullets, photo taken the same day as the above cockerel picture:

Quite a few of your silkies look like they have the mohawk style head, rather than the big afro style head. Makes me think they are males, but with silkies, it is hard to tell until later. Good luck. You have many cute looking frizzle cochins.
