Got my chicks this morning!!!! *pics*

Ideal says they add males for extra warmth and comfort, so I would say they're males. But they could make mistakes, right??? Maybe you'll luck out and some are pullets

Considering what happens to a lot of male chicks, these are very lucky they came to you. Enjoy them all!

I emailed the lady who placed my order, and she told me that the 8 extras are RIR males. Kinda cool because I was actually going to order a RIR male with my next order, but now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with the extra 7!

I found out how they sex baby chicks at the hatchery, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Pull the wing of one of the RIR chicks out (stretch it out) and look at the feather (stems). They should be all close to the same size/height. Then get some that are supposed to be hens and do the same. If they are one long, one short, one long, one short, then they are hens. You have to do this when they are little though.

I have never looked at a silkie, so I have no idea about them.

Hope it helps!

Now can I ask a dumb question? When you say packing peanuts
what does it mean
idunno.gif
You said you got them from Ideal?
I have my 1st Ideal order set for the 28th this month, what shall I expect? Like I said

so please excuse my ignorance!
Again great looking babies!

Mdove-

Packing peanuts are extra chicks they add for warmth during shipping. Usually roos. It's generally a 25 chick per order to ship. So take how many chicks you ordered from 25 and you'll likely get that for your extras. Enjoy!

So to understand you right....since I ordered the 25 pullets they will likely send me 8 more babies for the warmth? Cool! Thanks for the responce!

Wow, cool! Thanks Sharon!! I tried it, and all the males are, indeed, male. All the females are female though I think one looked iffy. I tried it on the Silkies, 2 of them looked like deffinant females, the other 3 I was not for sure.

I don't think you'll be getting any "packing peanuts" in your order if you ordered 25 chicks. I could be wrong though. I ordered 18 chicks, and got 8 extras, so my total was 26 but one of my pullets had died when I got them, so now my total is 25.

Good luck with yours!
