Got Paint?

When we moved into our last place, one of the bedrooms was painted black. Talk about a box.

It was for my son and we left one wall black. That was fine. The entire thing was just way too much.

I had a roommate back in my 20's living in NYC. We agreed to move in together (just as friends) and I went to drop some boxes off as we were moving in and he had painted the living room black! He also doused all the floor boards with Patchouli oil and I almost died from the smell. Bad enough he had to always dress entirely in black and wear Patchouli, but now the apartment has to be too!?! I should have backed out right then!

I would have left. I cannot STAND patchouli oil. It gags me.

We bought a business in Ca and moved from Tx. Our daughter who was 17 found out that we could not legally force her to come with us. So she stayed in our house while a realtor sold it. A couple friends moved in. Next thing you know the realtor is calling me to tell me they had pulled the wallpaper down in a couple bedrooms and painted them black.

Needless to say it didn't help to sell the house. Yes she ended up moving to Ca to live with us. Kids.

I hate it too, but now when I smell it, I get a certain sentimental feeling. That same roommate, who was a close friend, committed suicide in 2004, and so as much as I dislike Patchouli, it always makes me think of him and smile.

(I still try to avoid it however!)

Yeah, his name was Craig. Super nice guy, but REALLY troubled. Suffered from alcoholism and Manic Depression. He'd made prior attempts, it wasn't a total shock when it happened, but I had been out of touch with him for a few years. He was a VERY talented musician, played every instrument you can name. Now they hold a benefit concert for him every year in upstate New York where he was from, so he hasn't been forgotten.

Anyway, too sad, back to paint colors!

I have never been partial to dark colors in a house. When we first saw this place, I quickly changed my mind. The counter tops are cape cod blue and the owners painted two walls in the same color, and all my accent pieces that hold collectibles are white so the contrast is very attractive. The rest of the walls are white with maple wood trim. The wall with the corner stone fireplace is the cape cod blue. I really love it and I never thought I would.

Speaking of Cape Cod, when I lived in Mass I was almost on the Cape, lived just two towns away and went to the Cape all the time. So I did our (ex's) house in all Beachy stuff, Cape Cod colors, shells, sea birds, etc. It looked great, but then when I moved here, I'm in the middle of the wilderness with no ocean for miles and a bunch of beach decor.

I suppose I should replace it with woodland stuff, like black bears and lamps made of twigs, just haven't bothered. This bedroom that I am redoing I'm doing with kind of a "zen" feel. Very minimalist, low platform bed, asian style lamp, etc. I think it will be pretty, and something a little different.
