Got the Baytril & started the treatment

It's EXCELLENT now, He is doing 100% better! His ear, inside & out looks normal again, finally.

It was like after the plug came out he was able to clean his ear out a lot better. His canal & opening have went back down to normal size, are no longer swollen & back to their normal color(blue). I had to pull out a lot of feathers around his ear hole when I removed the plug out of it, they were just too crusted and falling out anyway, but I applied some Neosporin that same night and the whole area(about Quarter-sized) looks good again, you almost can't even tell they're missing...from a distance.

He has one last dose of Baytril tomorrow and then he's all done. I haven't noticed any ill effects from the medicine except for some runny poo after giving it to him, but I think that's mainly from stress, and of course the squinty eye that he had for a couple days.

His sister still has a small infection going on in one of her ears but it has stayed the same for 2 weeks now, I am going to clean it out after I get back home on the 20th and give it a couple days and them I will start the Baytril if it doesn't clear out on it's own. It's also the same kind of infection, Staph.

For now I will assume they just have "odd ears" and that's why they are the only 2 that got the ear infections.
I will have to report back to my Vet and let him know how it worked, he wasn't real sure about it how the Baytril would work.

I did have to buy it from my Vet. I am pretty sure in the US it's by prescription only. I know there's places online that you can buy it though(i think allbirds.com?), I just didn't wanna wait for it to arrive.

I think my runner duck may have the same problem-he's got what looks like a crusty bubble protruding from the side of his head. This bubble easily breaks off and beneath is what looks like a lot of ear wax. Is this the same infection??

A picture would be very helpful. When i first noticed it on my drake, i saw a round yellow/white circle in his ear hole. I easily broke off the top of it but there was more of the same gunk underneath. It has an almost rubbery texture but will break apart if you squish it with something(like between paper).

yer that sounds just like it. So should i just clear out the ear with tweezers or something and then see if it comes back, or will I have to go to the vet?

Even if you clean the ear all out it will still come back... I tried. You should take him to the Vet to get the medicine for him and the Vet can also double check for you, just to be sure. If they are unsure you can let them know what you think it is and tell them Baytril worked on my birds that had the same infection.

My Vet had never seen it before but was very open to what i had to say and thankfully we got them all better.

Here's a picture of My hen that had the ear infection. I hope it helps. As you can see, the whole opening of the ear is FULL of the rubbery yellow/white stuff.

I had to find a long, round-tipped pair of tweezers to remove the stuff out of the ear canal because it goes down in there pretty far. but I still had to give the Baytril orally.

ok. Thank you very much, it looks exactly the same as in your pic. Ill take him down to the vet and see what we can do. One last question- will the Baytril affect the bird or the egg's he fertilises in any way?
