grabbing by the tail

Depending on how big your coop is, I would be inclined to bring them into the coop in a dog crate with food and water for up to a week, 24/7, to get them used to saying and sleeping in the coop. This would be the same method I would use with a new chicken, to show them where they sleep.

I know this is old conversation but just to add for others don’t pull tail feathers, I did to a rooster, he’s big and he rips up my smallest hen when mounting (literally tears open her skin), well, he did it in front of me, and I did grab him by the tail feathers to rip him off her… I’m sure it was whatever I did to dislodge, but shortly there after within a week or so, he started walking hunched over, and toes starting to curl on 1 foot when he walked… A rooster, Quasimodo… After a few more weeks of him, not getting better, I did take him to the vet… And the vet said it appears to be a spinal injury of some sort… So now, the rooster is on Rimadyl and see if we can fix the damage. I probably did. I’m heartbroken that I did possibly did this to him. So I don’t recommend anyone grabbing a bird by their tail feathers as I learned what could go horribly wrong by that and I’ve been around Chickens pretty much my entire life.
