Gradual illness

Hi! Violet has started walking! She has terrible balance but she's doing so much better. And her sister is doing great, too (thankfully!!).
When I went to the vet, she said that a hen who was always lying down might hurt their keel bone. If this is a problem for your hens, she says you can prop their chest up on a towel or rag. It's a bit awkward to position it, but it works! Have you had to make "the decision" yet?

Hi. Great to hear that Violet is making progress and walking. Delighted to report that my girl too is walking a bit and standing much more than lying and I'm getting an egg every other day from one of the two of them. If I put them out in the stack yard for some sunshine and grass, they are both able to make their own way back to the stable that I use for a hen house which is about 70 feet away. Today she was less good than a couple of days ago but still able to make it under her own steam. She still pitches forward a lot particularly if she is excited or disturbed but I definitely can't call time on her yet and the two of them are so palled up that I worry if I do have to cull one, that the other will pine. Thinking positive at the moment though and hoping it won't come to that. Getting out in the fresh air and sunshine really does seem to help..... we just don't have that sort of weather every day unfortunately.

Keeping my fingers crossed that both of our girls continue to improve.

Regards

Barbara
