Grammar and spelling are a thing of the past!!!!

I also try to keep from bashing or correcting people who do not use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. However, if I cannot understand the point they're trying to convey, I will not respond.

I have a daughter with special needs she spells just how the word sounds.
Example cut=cute, der=dear I have learned to figure out what she is writing.
Now I have another daughter who was taught to read using phonics she can not spell very well either. She does try, my youngest son can spell better then any of us. I am so glad for spell check I have a hard time spelling. I do try and use punctuation. The text short hand makes it worse since I have to figure out what it means. I am glad I have teenagers at least they taught me the short hand.

I was talking to a lady during a recent overnight hospital stay and she said that they are having a real problem with the younger nurses just starting with them. They are using a lot of text and fb abbreviations to chart notes. When talked to about it they don't understand what the problem is. DH and I figure in 20 years (or less) communication will like deteroriate to like the point of conversation being like next to impossible. (Sorry, couldn't resist, as we always have to correct DD, 15, on that phrase).

Another observation:

At the moment I live in a gated community and it's horribly sad to see the the mothers pushing strollers and paying no attention at all to their children. Instead they have their eyes glued to their phones, reading and sending texts. Poor babies, unless they can type I guess they won't be able to communicate with mommy.

Not to mention that walking around oblivious to your surroundings, especially with a child in tow is never a good idea now days.

It appears that being self absorbed rules the day.

The English language is the hardest to learn and whoever came up with the spelling of most of our words was smoking some wacky weed! I drill my girls on their spelling tests each week. This week one of the words is measure. We do it written the first time and see how much they know. They both spelled it mashur!! That's exactly how it sounds so I can't fault them for that but we are working on spelling it right before Friday.

Thanks for the laugh. I actually thought about doing the same thing to the title of the post just to mess with people!!!

Katie4 this is the one that really disgusts me and is why my kids will never attend public school if I can avoid it. I have several FB friends that are teachers and their grammar, punctuation and spelling all SUCK!!!! I have to bite my tongue really hard and keep from posting and asking if that's what they are teaching their students. I think teachers should be very proficient at these skills and be held to a somewhat higher standard. That's not to say they can't make mistakes but when a teacher can't spell simple words and figure out their, there and they're then we got problems!!

ETA: I am not bashing public school as I know there are some good ones still out there. Our public school system is unfortunately not one. They are only worried about scoring good on the CSAP testing.

I try, I really do try!

However, after 20 years of working in a hands on mechanical field, and not using the written word at all, it is real hard to remember all the rules. It is only in the past few years, maybe 5, that I have used the internet, where the written word, punctuation, grammar is so important.

A good part of what I do for my living involves me actually writing
words-real words-all day long. Because at times, I need to go back
several hours, perhaps days, or even weeks to recheck something.

Shorthand doesn't get it for me.

Not only do I need to know what I meant, but those who work with
me may need to know exactly what I meant at that time.

So I tend to write out, in full, exactly what I meant to say. If I need a
word I can not spell, I own this great big gray book. Sets right on my
desk. It is called a DICTIONARY. Nice, two volume set. The book next to
that is called a THESAURUS.

Those are handy little books for someone like me, who can't always spell
correctly.

I didn't say that trying to be a smart alec. Not trying to offend anyone.

A good dictionary, a thesaurus are books that I think every desk should have.
I can understand everyone not having Elements of Style, or any number of
writing books. But a simple dictionary?

They stopped spelling in the 7th grade. Besides when they did teach spelling we were taught how to spell words no one uses in their day to day life.
