I think if some of these employers expected a little more out of their employees then we wouldn't see as much of this.

I will say I am pretty picky about grammar and spelling but I got second place in my 6th grade spelling bee (long time ago!) and I also had a 6th grade teacher that would not accept any paper or school work if it had words misspelled or punctuation missing. He actually used to yell about it and throw it back to you and tell you to fix it. Alot of kids didn't like him but he was my favorite teacher by far.

My Mom was in a restaurant once, and she was telling the waitress that she home schooled. The woman started asking her if we could spell things like cheese, milk, soup, butter etc. She then handed Mom a note that said: we have high school graduates that come here to work and cannot spell those words!

That is just incredible.

Sadly my print writing looks much nicer then my cursive lol. But how many people buy those written out ones from walmart now vs actually doing it?

It's not been taught in most Kentucky classrooms for years - it's not in the state mandated standards, so time should not be wasted on teaching it. That's not MY opinion of course. Just last month I was showing some kids story books made by students of mine years ago. One of the funniest stories was The Unforgettable Homies. The kid handed it back to me, saying "I can't read cursive." Many primary source documents are in cursive, and kids who don't know cursive are helpless. Cursive should not be dropped IMO...

Well, I think checks will become a thing of the past soon enough, but you're right. You are asked to sign many different documents. Maybe people who don't know cursive just print??? I know with my son's student loan paperwork, and with taxes on-line, you can just do electronic "signatures."

My cousin dropped out of highschool. So he forgot how to wright in cursive and the bank and other places say to just sign an X

I think the "X" signature should be outlawed since many of us had education. If they can not read or write well, at least they should know how to cursive their names to sign important documents and letter writing by snail mail.

You BET I will teach my daughter cursive writings when she finishes her block writings (without tails). I think it is really important, IMO. I don't care if you are fourth grader to high school, get some cursive lessons and it can help you in life in the long run. Glad for DD's teachers which they intend to teach ALL of their students cursive writing, proper grammer placements. My high school teacher faulted me for being too "wordy" which I loved to write as much details with new words to be put into use. It was FUN!

I must admit print is easier on the eyes as I am older and seeing less and less cursive writings nowadays and rarely ever have any snail mails. Hope not all is lost!

AGAIN I will say that we are not talking about forums, FB or other internet chat areas. We are talking about professionals who can't spell and don't practice good grammar. We are talking about journalists, teachers, TV stations, businesses and billboards. Things like that. We are not directing this at BYCers! We don't care if you can spell but keep in mind if your spelling and grammar are really horrible not very many people will read your posts because they either can't understand it or it's so jumbled they can't follow!

I think if people take the time to read all the posts then they will understand that we aren't targeting them and won't get offended. If they happen to be one of the "professionals" we are talking about and don't have good spelling and grammar skills then I hope they are offended and do something about it. I don't want to read a newspaper that looks like a third grader was proofreading it!!

Also the fact that the thread is still going fine is testament to itself that we are just having a friendly conversation about something that irks us. No harm done!!

I will start off by saying that the grammar and spelling of most of the people on here is decent. (from your first post)

I understand clearly what your saying and I have read every post in this thread.....but you keep saying you don't care if people on this forum/s can spell or not and you are not referencing them but you keep mentioning it in a round about way.

Just saying it is offensive to some BYCer's.

My cousin hand one of her high school students write an essay because he said he didn't need stupid math to work as a cook at a BBQ place. It was titled "How Math is needed at my work."He spelled every word exactly like it sounded, not correctly. She is upset now because he is graduating and can't spell anything.
