Raising chickens is like anything else - there are a lot of ways to do it and succeed. My grandma fed her chickens on ground corn, garden greens, and table scraps, and it worked for her. She kept a flock of more than 100 RIR.
I feed starter crumbles, and let the chickens free range after 12 weeks old. I have a supply of layer crumbles available from then on. I give them scratch grains after they are 6 weeks old. Millet and other whole grains, plus table scraps, are like treats for my birds. I have a mealworm farm, and the birds get a treat from that too.
