I think if you hold them soon after hatch regularly they will imprint on you somewhat.Are they feathered now?
I think it's normal for them to be fearful of you, especially when you aren't around them often. The females seem the most timid, but usually get more friendly after they start laying. Take them a treat every time you go out there and you will become their best friend... some boiled egg, bread crumbles, even greens of some sort if you've got grit for them... or meal worms. Once they associate you with food, you will be golden! I don't think holding them is necessary. The ones friendly by nature will be friendly as they age.
