Color genetics in chickens is very complex. Most of the time it's not enough to know the color of an individual bird, but you need to know the parents as well. There are often more than 2 alleles involved to make a particular color, then you've got pattern to consider as well. There is a "calculator" http://kippenjungle.nl/Overzicht.htm but I haven't had the patience to go through it and see how it works.

I dislike mixing breeds in general. But i may cross my chickens to give resistance to the sussex and color to the polish. It would be interesting. I wonder if anyone knows what you get crossing speckled sussex with buff laced polish?
