Granny's gone and done it again

Haha, what? None of the babies look like part honas. That mama hatched them by herself and raised them alone until last week, when the hona cock started courting her. He’s low man in town, and he was raising the pullets as his harem, but I think the Cochin cock ran him off. So now he’s after Peachy, because she’s outside of the flock.

My half-turken is getting pretty big, he might be vying for top cock soon. I have 7 roos, I counted today. I haven’t counted pullets/hens.

Gertrude is monitoring the proper cleaning of her house.
And saying "Do it right the first time or you'll be doing it again!"

Nice Bruce. I want a pond . Never happen though. What do you use the solar panels for ?
They make electricity :p
They are connected to the grid so whatever we aren't using when they are producing goes out on the wire and we get retail credit for it. When they aren't producing, or producing less than we are using at the time, we get power from the wire at retail. It was cloudy most of the day and rained a lot of it, they still produced 9.5 kWh which is just less than half of what we typically use in a day.

sigh so the one I am keeping has a new name. THE TERRORIST in less then 20 minutes she whomped on all 3 of her siblings LOTS and LOTS of screaming from the other 3. @ are currently huddled in a corner. :gig:he:th
She's figured out she doesn't have to compete with the others for a chance to stay so no more good behavior!

Ugh, puppy was chewing something outside and I took it from her. It was a dead mouse!
nom-nom! :D

It was in a safe place both times. I just didn’t want him to handle it and cause stress.
Yes, good job mom! Last thing the little bird needs is a mauling!
I was surprised to learn that many baby birds leave the nest partially fledged and unable to fly much. Seems to be part of the natural process and the parents take good care of them. We had a CA Towhee baby a couple years back I was convinced needed rescuing. I even caught it! Was mostly worried the dogs would eat it. Looked it up online, and it said they leave the nest very early and to give it back to the parents. I encouraged it to go back into the neighbor's yard (no dogs!).

Still waiting on that 11:00 phone call. and have a meeting here in half hr. Thats when they will call. I called them said she didnt call because I didnt respond. Big ol lie. You think your SS office wont lie to you ? Wrong. I have proof.
Why are you talking to the SS?

So you can see. Surrounded by a bunch of flatness...

You get a random big promontory of where did this come from?? Google isn’t helping me find out what it is, what’s it’s called, all the how’s and whys of it....it makes me ponder!!

Ps crew. If the local feed store still has chicks...pro’s gonna go and do it again this weekend. I need more chickens.
Isn't the second picture just zoomed in more, so you can see the features? The details of the hills don't show up in the first pic because it's too far away?

You've been wanting chicks all spring! :jumpy

I heard from the Bird Rescue today about the baby hawk my #2 found on the road. Turns out they could not find the nest or the parents. They spent quite a bit of time looking, but no luck. It was quite confusing how the baby ended up where it did considering the fences and the road... didn't seem possible that it was there, but #2 sent google pics marking the exact spot. That will remain a mystery.
The good news is they found an adoptive nest about a mile down the road in a huge eucalyptus tree. Two red tailed parents raising two babies in their nest that are only 3 days older than #2's. Worked out perfectly... by the time the baby was placed in the nest, one of the 2 chicks had moved out of the nest, so it was only our bird and his new sister. Brad, the rescue guy, said the chick in the nest was huge compared to ours, so he figured the big one was a female and ours a male. Size difference as adults is the only way to sex them accurately. I don't know the process on how they determine the age of the chicks, but apparently there is a system where they can determine age to the day after hatching. Very interesting stuff!
Anyway, we are very happy the baby hawk has new parents and is living the good life.

PS. While we were driving home tonight, we saw a red tailed soaring around in the area near the eucalyptus tree. One of the parents hunting for our baby's dinner! So cool  Life is good.
