Why do you need gloves and long sleeves, Larry, do they have thorns or prickles of some kind?Okra needs a low nitrogen fertilizer high in phosphate and high in potassium. I have some 5-15-30 and okra thrives with small amount applied as the season moves along. Use no fertilizer until it is a few inches high. Okra doesn't do well where there are nematodes. There is an organic solution to get rid of nematodes. It's actually another nematode that eats the bad nematode. It should be thinned to one plant every foot and the rows 4' apart. Gloves and log sleeves to harvest. From what you have posted this is the best I can do to help get bit of okra growing. It does take some space as it will spread and sucker out.
Beautiful blossom, Larry, is that an okra blossom?First thing in the mornings this is what I see in an okra patch:

It's and okra blossom. I can pick in short sleeves and bare handed. Okra has spines on it that will make some people itch like they have rolled in nettles. Why do you need gloves and long sleeves, Larry, do they have thorns or prickles of some kind?
