Granny's gone and done it again

Hm. I don't recall anybody in my family being pleased about my ability to spell, or even caring. It was just easy and fun.

Maybe it was fun because it put me ahead of my classmates. My teachers were pleased, and I liked that. Well. All but one. And I didn't like her either so I aced the tests just to, er, spite her. She thought members of my race were naturally lazy and stupid, so I had an attitude of, "Well, I'll show HER!"
And so you did! Good for you!
People do judge you by the way you speak. It's probably not as extreme here as in, say, England, but speech patterns can certainly limit one's ability to earn an income or to climb the socioeconomic ladder.

I have a Pa Dutch accent. However, I went to public school so my accent is different then most Pa Dutch. I'm frequently asked about my British accent. Both over the phone and in person. We didn't pronounce the 'J' like a 'CH' like most Pa Dutch people do
