I honestly didn't know which emoji to give this post because many fit.Morning all. Had something interesting happen here yesterday. Phone rang. One of the Amish farmers who lives a road over wanted to know if my DH could make a part for him with his 3D printer. DH went over to his farm and heard the story. They have a set up that they can hook to the agitator of their wringer washing machine that turns it into a butter churn. They were needing the cog that fits the agitator that they somehow hook up to a box that holds their jars of cream so that when the agitator rotates, it agitates the cream and turns it to butter. DH explained that the butter and milk they are producing is for people who are lactose intolerant. My curiosity was peaked so when he went over today to do a trial fitting of the part I asked him to ask the wife what type of milk and cattle were they getting this from as I never heard of any cow that produced lactose free milk.
Well the cows are called A2/A2 cattle which still left me in the dark so I looked it up. This is what I learned:
A2/A2 cattle are dairy cows that carry two copies of the A2 gene, meaning they produce milk containing only the A2 variant of beta-casein protein, with no A1 beta-casein.
- Genetics: A2/A2 cows inherit one A2 gene from each parent. When two A2/A2 cows are bred, all offspring will also be A2/A2. Cows with A1A2 or A1A1 genotypes produce milk with A1, A2, or both proteins.
- Breeds: While all breeds can carry A2 genes, Guernsey (over 90% A2), Jersey (over 50% A2), and Icelandic cows are naturally high in A2 genetics. Holsteins typically carry both A1 and A2, but selective breeding can produce A2/A2 Holsteins.
- Milk Production: A2/A2 milk is marketed as easier to digest for some people who experience discomfort with conventional milk, though scientific evidence supporting health benefits remains limited and inconclusive.
Isn't this wild? While I don't think that it's entirely lactose free, it's definitely easier for a lot of people to digest. Learn something new everyday.
77 degrees here today. Sunny. YAY is all I can say. Very sad about Chuck Norris dying. All the legends are gone. A whole generation of movie good guys and none to replace them.
