From http://homeguides.sfgate.com/black-yellow-tree-caterpillars-poisonous-88390.html
Non-Stinging Black and Yellow Caterpillars
Most caterpillars, including black and yellow ones, pose no harm to humans or animals. The black swallowtail caterpillar (Papilio polyxenes), redhumped caterpillar (Schizura concinna) and yellownecked caterpillar (Datana ministra) have no stingers or poison. Black swallowtail caterpillars measure 2 inches long, with smooth green bodies marked with yellow spots and black bands. Redhumped caterpillars measure about 1 1/2 inches long with yellow bodies covered in black, white or reddish brown stripes. Its head is brick red or orange and it has a distinctive hump with two black spines at its fourth body segment. Yellownecked caterpillars have black bodies covered with long white hairs and yellow stripes down each side; they contort their bodies into a U shape when disturbed.
If it's written on the internet, it MUST be true.
No stings or poison means it won't hurt to handle them. Don't know about eating them.
What tree was it on? Sometimes if the plants are toxic the caterpillar might be.
Whatever you do, it would be good to kill them or you will lose more trees next year. Hopefully your cherry doesn't die!thank you for all the research ! Exciting stuff here today ! It was on weeping cherry.
