I was taught in H.S. Art class that white is the absence of color because it reflects them all, as black is a combination of them all because it absorbs them all.

That's all I have to go on; that and the definitions on wikipedia.org and answers.com, which both pretty much agree with one another. One of them goes so far as to say that the opposite was once thought & taught to be true, but no longer is.

You are confusing between the pigment and color!

Pigment is some kind of a Matirial that absorb light and reflect only certin wave length. Let say that you have a "color" green, a tree leaf for example it contains a pigment (chlorophyll) that absorb all the lights exept the green wave that is reflected and Comes to ouer eyes and this is the reason why we see it green.if you try to grow plants on green light you will probably kill them. Color from outer hand, is a wave of light and the difference between them is by their length, every length we recognize it as a different color.
