Gunsmithing! Your husband would be a hero to both my boys. One has an avid (think autistic/facts & stats) interest in guns and the other wants to learn blacksmithing (I know it's different, but still...)
Sounds like you've got it all under control, but we are still going to mommy you a bit!Just can't help it. For the future, about the ants, carpenter ants don't really eat wood, they just chew tunnels through it. They will eat both protein and sugary foods, so borax with sugar or peanut butter would work for bait. I'm a little paranoid about insecticides, but you gotta do what you gotta do, because I sure use them against mites on the chickens.
Hahahaa! Let's see it just one more time!I've been on that list a couple of times.
That's why I employ the mega-multi-quote posts.

This infestation was bad. We have a whole colony (or more) nearby and the ants were here because it's warm, not really eating anything. I don't do chemicals, like ever, but we really needed this handled before it got any worse. I found them in my bed more than once.
Gunsmithing is a great thing, if you can find someone to apprentice with. My husband did a correspondence class, but they also have some really good trade schools, with Rocky Mountain (I think) being one of the best. My husband pays to be an apprentice with a local gunsmith and they do everything from cleaning to fabricating custom parts to dipping guns in hydrocoating and building custom or restoring guns. My in-laws pay for any schooling that my husband or his siblings want, so they pay his apprenticeship fees every year.
I know you and everyone else here mean well, so no harm, no foul. I do like to hear from lots of people, so it doesn't bug me as long as it's said out of concern and not condescending.
If your mind goes there, watch out for Twist. His brain is swirling around down there. On the bright side, we always know where to find him!
