I had a silver phoenix. hens are very drab. of course all my pics. are on the old thread.

I remembered. That's why I thought about them... you really liked that rooster, I thought. Hens are supposed to be drab.

Bubba had a field trip to a local "farm" and I went too. Pretty neat!

What an awesome picture - so glad you guys had a good time!

Lots of the show stock birds are way bigger than hatchery JGs. Langshans and Brahmas are massive. Minorcas and even the rocks are huge. Only thing is, big birds eat more. That's why I thought of Icelandics for you, except the idea would be to not crossbreed and keep their gene pool pure. Chicken racism!!!

Yes - the birds bred to the standard are SO impressive, really eye opening to go to a show and see them and then look at the commercially produced/production type birds that you get from hatcheries.

The wind is serious now!!! Please lights stay on!!!!!! I'm not feeling well!!!!!!

Hang in there, Linda, you'll be all right. Did you see the craziness down around Manzanita, etc here in OR -- tornadoes! Thought I left those back in Indiana. Hated to see the video and pictures of the damage, that's one of my favorite areas to visit on the coast.
Morning!

Mare, where abouts are you in Oregon? We are about 30 miles from the coast, which is close enough for fresh seafood but not the brunt of the storms coming in. Have to admit, I'm a bit of a seafood snob. Frozen crab.... it's not for me!

As the crow flies we are right around 70 miles from the coast - but to get there means going so far South or North first to get to the highways that run through the mountains that it ends up being a 90+ mile drive. We are right on the other side of the Coast Range, which offers a lot of protection in breaking up storms that come ashore. That being said, anything less powerful than the current storm and I'd be in the car on my out there because I love a good storm on the beach!

took the words out of my mouth Mare. I know he has chicks. I think those pics. are enhanced though.

The quality of the colors varies a lot in BLRW -- mainly because they fell victim to being the flavor of the month not all that long ago and this lead to some very non-selective breeding in the effort to get on the bandwagon and turn a quick $$$$. Serious breeders do produce birds with some awesome coloration like what is shown in these photos...the bird also has a much nicer "type" than those being turned out in a lot of sources.
