those tend to work a little better on narrowish boards   maybe after you get it sort of even use that to put the finishing touches on  


I think she wants the wood in its natural structure so it would look better, so she only needs to level a few points. The logs won't be cut down like the picture... That's if I'm reading campings mind right.....
 
Camping, A plane is so very hard to use. Mucho muscles. If I were to attempt that I guess I would make the top first then as one solid piece I could tell what needs to come off and possible chalk line it an electric sander maybe ? Im not sure either. There has to be a saw that slices
