Granny's gone and done it again

Good morning!!! Late start here -- 2-hour delay for schools today but at least they went!!!!!! He may not want to admit it, but I think even DS was ready for this as I think he'd reached the point of being bored being at home every day....the visit to the farm was the only real break we had in all those days. Dropped him off, took Z to the park (total slush fest there, but she had fun) and now home to get some chores done...or at least that was the plan before I gave in to BYC's siren song, lol.
You said it! BYC's siren song! Very dangerous for those of us who tend to procrastinate.

I hate our school. :barnie

I brought the snacks in today before school started. As we're walking to the store room the teacher says "you know I still can't understand anything [bubba] says." I just stared at her with my mouth open. He goes to speech three times a week, and she knows that. So then I'm defensive, like this is my fault. I assure her that we are constantly practicing and running the speech drills. I tell her that he has way more sounds than 6 months ago. I repeat myself a billion times, because there's nothing else to say.

I bumped into the speech lady and we got to talking. Then I start putting all the pieces together: pre-k had their testing last week. The teacher can't understand him, but she's doing the testing. The speech lady said in other schools the speech therapist does the testing on speech kids, but of course not ours.

SO my hackles are raised. IF we get his marks and he scored poorly, then I'm going to raise all sorts of fusses. If his teacher is the one doing the testing and she can't understand him, then he's being set up for failure. :rant

Don't get defensive, get MAD. It is not as important that she understand what bubba says, but it is important that Bubba understands her... and you certainly hope she is doing all she can to communicate with him... perhaps she needs to work harder! Hold that teacher to a very high standard. You are doing your part and to not need to make excuses to her. My older son had an autistic girl in his kindergarten class who did not speak at all, and the teacher still included this girl in the class as much as possible. If I were you, I would be proactive and ask the speech teacher to evaluate Bubba for pre-k, just so you know. I would also go to the principal about your concerns. You need to be Bubba's advocate.

How old is he? And what grade is he in?

I can't understand my granddaughter but I have been testing her. She understands everything I say. Amazing. I also have a little boy in my Sunday school class. I have a hard time understanding him. But as I listen better I am getting better at it.

This is the teachers first year in pre-k, so speech lady thinks that the teacher just lacks experience listening to littles.

Speech lady is over the moon for bubba. She said she nearly cried when the teacher told her the same thing. And I saw the pages and pages of notes the speech lady has taken.

I guess I need to see what the teacher is having trouble with. "I can't understand anything" is not as helpful as saying "to pass testing he needs to perform x,y,z." When I look at the skills, it's stuff he knows or can do. But I'm listening to him with understanding ears. And the speech delay can't count against him, speech lady said.

I offered to sit in class all day every day and help in any way I can. We have a meeting tomorrow, so I'll get more info then.
