It was tough. My grandpa was one of 9 kids and had to leave school in the 8th grade to go out and work. He and one of his brothers got up before dawn to work at a bakery. Some days they would get 5 cents or so, but most days they just worked for bread for the family.

As he got older, he got a good government job as a surveyor. His crew surveyed the state of Washington. Then later he married my grandmother and became a deputy sheriff for Los Angeles county (which was a lot smaller than it is today!). All of that on an 8th grade education. He loved to read and taught himself how to do all sorts of things. He was always building or growing his garden or making things in the garage. Very good man.

Wow

You wouldn't believe the amount of kids that think 9/11 is just a story. They teach it in history classes in school now. Read straight from a book so it doesn't seem real.

My Grandmother walked the tracks collecting coal to heat their house and would fish with her hands. She would find coal in the water too and mom said their hands would crack and bleed from trying to get the coal out of the water. She also made moonshine on her stove and sold/ traded it for food. They lived in the montians so they already had all the things they needed for the most part but they did get coupons for flour and meal. My uncle , her son was a prisoner of war against Germany and when he got home he weighed 85 lbs. He was 6ft. 2

I will never forget that day. I was sick with worry . My mom and step were on their way down from Fl. for Roberts Bday. Longest day of my life waiting for word from them.

Wow. That's quite a hard life. Your poor uncle. Terrible, but at least he survived.
