Haha! Going to take an act of god to get that tree down anytime soon. The pileated woodpecker is doing his best to chop it down. Wish I could get a good picture of it, but it is very shy... always moves to the back of the tree. This is exactly what it looks like... even the same type of tree. See the big chunks it hammers out? The thunking sound it makes is really loud!

You'll keel over when you hear what distracted me: CLEANING. I've had good momentum this week. I scrubbed the kids' toy kitchen then got a start on my message center. I want burlap but not sure I have any left.
I was going to ask you about this very bird and forgot. I have 2 and they are thunking away at 2 different trees. very close to each other and I wondered about the behavior ? 2 males in competition or a decoy nest maybe ?Haha! My farm neighbor has two. They're always in the road, but "roaming" is part of what they do to protect. I can't stand to leave a dog outside.
Thanks and thanks! I got the purse one year from reddit secret Santa. It was full of seeds for the garden!

Granny, you're probably seeing a pair. They are very similar looking, but think the females have a gray cheek stripe where the male has red. They are bigger than crows! First time I saw them was in Yosemite thunking on a rotting log. They were used to people I guess, and I got to stop and watch them for awhile. Rear their heads back and ka-thunk! Pretty impressive. This time of year they are probably chiseling the the bark off to get grubs and bugs underneath. Them hammering away at a tree means the tree is either dead or dying. Woody Woodpecker cartoon is based on these, including the laugh. Have you heard them make that call? Very distinctive.
She is drop dead gorgeous and why cant I see your post til I quote it ?
